How exactly does an Intercooler cool the air before it hits the turbo ?

Actually it cools the air from the turbo and before the intake manifold.

ye i fucked up on my title. Dont really care if i get "flamed". im 16, dont have a car yet, and i dont live in a place with a lot of japanese imports or forced induction cars. so i dont know anything. everyone has to learn sometime... so flame all u want.

How about people answer the question without flaming? Id be willing to bet the majority of people who look at this and go "what an idiot" couldnt physically explain how an intercooler works.

So lets stop harassing each other for trying to learn, and spread some knowledge.

 

Well it's a pretty simple tool. Nothing special. You have these small metal rows of thin (somewhat pliable) metal.. you can see through it. And then you have your "shafts" I guess you could call them, and you have your end tanks. Turbo blasts air into one end tank then into the shafts. Since the shafts are in direct contact with the thin metal, and the thin metal always has air passing through it (at least on a frount mount (FMIC)), the air cools the air being pushed by the turbo through the intercooled.

PS: There's no need to flame someone asking such a basic question, plus it's a genuine concern The guy just wants to know. I highly doubt there's alot of non-technical discussion on intercoolers, at least any ones that he'd understand.

Bellevue is the washinton capitol for imports (bmw's galore) I think there are more imports per capita then anywhere else in this state. That is unless you go to china town
Anyways keep the rite attitude, follow the rules (posted here) and this is a great place to learn about anything related to honda's and a lot of other cars too.

 

Yeah, what illicon2003 said. Since metal conducts heat, the heat is dispersed throughout the intercooler (ie. to the fins), which means bigger surface area. Bigger surface area = more air passing over it. Air takes the heat away.. (most of it, it wont ever be 100% efficient), and then you have cool air.

Intercoolers are needed because compressing air makes it hotter by nature.
