Default how does boost work?

just what the question asks. i want to learn more about how boost works for daily driving and the such. i'm going to turbo my car in less than a week and i've been caught up in building my kit for so long that i forgot that knowing how to with it on was important too. thought it was a good topic too seeing how i did many searches and nothing came up.

thanks in advance.

Serious advice to you...don't boost your car unless you've done some serious research or you'll wind up spending a lot of $$$$$ (speaking from experience!)

Since this is tech forum someoone should answer his question.

Boost is the build-up of pressure measured in the intake manifold created by forced induction of any means. Be it supercharging or turbocharging. The common term boost refers to the P.S.I. or Pounds per Square Inch. also refered to as BAR which is mearly atmoshperic pressure at sea level, IE 14.7 PSI. . To be truthful Boost is not nessesarily a good thing. The more boost you run the more pressure is being put on the valvetrain by pushing on the valves while they remained closed. The best (or most efficient) turbo system would have a PSI of 1; meaning that it would be efficient enough to ingest and combust all available air at the point of intake before the pressure builds. However we live in an imperfect world and lack the means to make it that efficient. So instead some people resorted to the cruder methods of turning up the 'boost' (I myself have been known to do this also). The most power you can get will be when your engine can keep up with the pressure you try to create with said turbo or supercharger.

I hope tht clears it up a bit... If not let me know... I say F#ck Corky Bell he's an idiot. I looked at the cover of his book and felt dumber. Enough I could go on all day about how he stole all of his material, and cheats everyone out of their money. I hate him with all my

Like I said Corky is an idiot. I'm very aware he wrote a book. I've had the luck of actually meeting him. Believe me he's an idiot. He stole everything in that book from other publications.

Umm, yeah...I don't think his book says "I invented turbochargers and everything to do with forced induction"...his book is an overview of a field of modification. I don't think it's a bible and I'm not sure it's worth the money, but it's worth it to spend the time looking through it. The one point I really disagree with him on is water-injection. He flat-out says that it is garbage which is completely wrong. You NEED water/alcohol injection past a certain boost level to run street gas, and it's much more economical in the long-run than running race gas. My next turbo mod: Water(and alcohol)-injection.

see the other thread I posted this in,
1 BAR = 14.5 PSI
1 ATM = 14.7 PSI

1 BAR does not equal 1 ATM

We already had this discussion https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=373528 Your still wrong even here.

14.7 is bar which is the metric equivalent of ATM. Please go back to the post and read it again. I tried that coverter and 1 BAR is equal to 0.9869233 ATM. If anything ATM is 14.5, but iknow for a fact BAR is 14.7. I don't use any Standard measurement just Metric. Please listen for once instead of spreading false facts. BAR = 14.7 any fellow engineer would back me up on this. And when turbocharging you don't count the atmospheric pressure already around the car. You only count that when sizing a turbo for your car for a set amount of boost.

dude, get a ******* life, you can hate him if you want, but Corky never said anything about inventing turbochargers or anything...

Also stealing materials from other publications...hmmmmm....did you go to school ?
how many ******* books of an exact same subject were available ?

go to any book store, and go look up a calculus book or java programming book, how many different versions are out there ? they're ALL THE SAME, TEACHES THE SAME THING, SHOWING THE SAME THINGS.

Now, did that author(s) stole the materials from other publications ?

Corky Bell did an excellent job by introducing the term and the theory behind turbocharging to average people like us.....

but I guess YOU are not avergae like the rest of US.....just a lil more bag of issues than most of us...

BTW, where are you from and where did you meet Corky ?

I'll bring up your name the next time I see him. Oh wait, you have a degree and are related to Albert Einstein. Sorry on me for being a dumb ***. May god have mercy on my soul.

Maybe you should follow your own advice?

any fellow engineer would back me up on this.
So far it looks like you're on your own.

And when turbocharging you don't count the atmospheric pressure already around the car. You only count that when sizing a turbo for your car for a set amount of boost.
Maybe we should change your title to "Captain Obvious"?
