How do you tune for detonation you cannot hear?
I was wondering when you tune a built engine meanign forged pistons w/sleeved block, where the knock sensor may be dissabled, how does oen tune for detonation that is not audible?
I have heard that although it may not be audible, it could still cause damage. Do u guys just use the factory knock sensor after the engine is all warmed up?

Well im not sure if my p75 ecu is able to read my knock sensor, it might. Also it might read false knock cause of piston slap, but that might not be a prob if the engine is warmed up.
How does the stock knock sensor do in sensing knock?

Wouldn't the forged pistons have a little more slap/noise than the stock? Freaking out the stock sensor? I'm interested too (because I don't have a knock sensor

Consider a J&S Safeguard for knock detection.(I know its expensive) It only listens for knock when the corrisponding piston gets within a certan Deg. of TDC. In other words it only listens for knock when its supposed to happen, and not all the time. Another listening device is here>> http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&A=0348 Its basicly a low wattage amplifier attached to a microphone. Just some suggestions.

You can adjust the sensitivity of the unit so it won't detect the slap but they are a pricey option. Also in decreasing the sensitivy it would have a hard time detecting actual knock.

it's basically a modified hearing amplifier from radio shack.
it works extremely well for tuning purposes... because any human is better than an electronic device as far as hearing goes. so you can be the judge if you are detonating or not...
i'll get some part numbers and post them here for you guys... it costs about 15-20 bucks total, and all you need is a soldering iron a small screwdriver, and electrical tape....
