Compression and leak down test. Do a compression test first, if you get good numbers, perform a leak down test. If both of those are good, then in most cases you bottom end is alright. You still could have cracked a cylinder sleeve, etc.

 

It wont start, smokes, idles funny, vacuum gauge reads low, coolant spraying everywhere, flames out of the hood, oil everywhere, poor acceleration. Pick one.
