Hondata Tuning Experience. (Long and pic intensive)
Trip description. Driving 400 miles to Payn Technologies in Troy Michigan to get hondata 3b tuned. We left Racine at 11pm for a 10am appointment at Payn Tech.
Here is the car on the dolly ready for the trip. I tried to find a flat bed but couldn't. So, we rented a dolly and borrowed my dads friends Tahoe.
Every thing was going fine until a little while past Chicago into Michigan. We felt a shimmy on I-94 pulled over. I tightened the lugs on the trailer. We drove a little futher, and the shimmying continued.
We pulled off the left rear lug cover of the Tahoe, and this is what we found!
In the middle of nowhere 250 miles from our destonation we had 2 broken studs, one complety missing, and they were all on the same side. Can you say SCREWED!
Well, we tightend the remaining three, and drove about 20mph to the nearest Semi service center. This is about 3am so no one is availabe to fix the truck, and we didn't have replacement parts anyway.
So, we took the car off the trailer, and drove to payn tech. Reason for trailering the car in the first place was I have an oil leak, and it was getting bad fuel milage, and I didn' know how it would react to a long journey with my turbo just installed.
Thats my dad in the pic.
The tuning Tom did was relatively painless. The tuning was done on a Mustang dyno....so the power definitly looks LOW. I hope to do a run on a dynojet locally so I can see the difference. But from what the Mustang Dyno owner told me, a mustang Dyno does own. It has tons of diagnostic capablities, and simulates real world driving by putting load on the engine. One of the guys has a turbo mustang pushing 480whp on the Mustang Dyno with a stock block. On a dynojet dyno he was around 550whp.
Here is the base run, and a tuned run at 7psi. Tom said with his tune the engine shouldn't have any problem lasting 5 years.
I wanted a 10psi tune so I could run that at the track on high octane fuel. Tom tuned 10psi on pump gas, and it ran great. He said it will be safe on 93 octane, but not to do it alot.
Then we had to go back and find the Tahoe, and fix it. Good thing I brought alot of tools along with some big screwdrivers. I don't like fixing cars that aren't mine in a parking lot.
Things I learned taking this trip.
1. Allways check lugs on the vehicles involved. (I did check my civic's).
2. Bring LOTS of tools. I brought alot, except I didn't bring a good jack or stands...could have come in handy when reparing Tahoe.
3. NEVER BUY A TAHOE!!!!!
4. U-Haul trailers suck. The straps that were holding my car on were coming loose after 150 miles.
5. I can still drive after being awake 40 hours straight!!!

Fun....ehhhh. It was more of an enlightening experience. If it wasn't for the Tahoe, it could have been fun.

Congrats on your new setup, Hxman. You're no longer torque-less, that's for damn sure.
Sidenote- Whoever tightened that wheel last DEFINATELY over torqued, which led to what happened.

agreed. my dad used to make fun of my car. calling it a rice burner(its not ricey), calling it an economy car lack of torque this and that...... Now, he comes home and tells me about seeing an intercooler on a supra, asks me what times I ran at the track and what I beat, and talks about how much faster my car is then his old Z28 hehe. to cool dads.

Re: Hondata Tuning Experience. (Arturbo)
Must have been a fun trip.
<---talked to Tom when he was in San Antonio for NOPI a couple of weeks ago. Nice guy. Too bad I don't have enough money for those new DART blocks coming out or atleast I don't right now.

Re: Hondata Tuning Experience. (89civic1.8T)
Tom Payn Definately a cool guy. He rebuilt my tranny and installed a Quaife when I broke it at Norwalk raceway last year. I was screwed...I drove the car there. Luckily Tom brought an EMPTY car trailer with him knowing someone would need fixing. He trailered it to his shop and fixed it, then I rode there with my friends who had their Hondata installed in their Jackson racing Si. I highly recommend Tom's tuning though....he knows his Honda **** for being a Mustang man.
