Default Hondata... Laptop dependant?

Is hondata laptop dependant, or standalone... also does it replace ALL necessary turbo electronics like Turbo Timer, Fuel Managment, and Boost Controller?

I guess im trying to find out if its more cost effective to get:

Apexi Turbo Timer, AVC-R, and SAFC or just a hondata?

standalone

it handles vtec engagement, fuel management and ignition control, but no turbo timer or boost controller

I don't think any engine management would be capable of acting as a turbotimer, but the Link range of engine management for Honda (check the link in my signature) can do everything else you've mentioned, electronic boost control according to RPM/gear, ignition timing/retard, fuel managemenet, ALS, launch control, rev/vtec limits and points, etc.. check out the link in my signature. Also, while a Hondata is laptop dependant, the Link engine management units can be tuned with or without a laptop.. my two Honda's were tuned without the laptop and they both run great, no problems at all

I said it's a standalone, but it is really laptop dependant since it requires a laptop to tune and burn a chip. After tuning, it works as a standalone.

I have a 4b

well technically you dont need a 'laptop' to burn the roms... any desktop could do that as well. But for the sake of convenience and portability, a laptop is ideal.

Most GOOD standalones are laptop dependant! The Power FC has a keypad but it can be tuned COMPLETELY when a Laptop and the datalogit software is used. Haltac, Motec, TEC III (Wintec) are all laptop dependent for tuning. Handhelds are cool for quick on-the-fly adjustments but are severly lacking when it comes to completely tuning a setup.

I don't know when the New Hondata hardware/software upgrade with lots of bells, whistles and fixes will be released but a couple months ago Doug said it would be out sometime this summer.

I use my desktop to burn and make ROMs when I am bored but I use my laptop for Datalogging and quick burns!
