Maybe this will help alot of people out.

I bought an EBAY turbo supposedly a copy of the Garrett T3T04e and in 6 months (5000 miles) the shaft started wobbling nasty and blew the oil seal.

So i did some research on the web and found a place in utah called high tech turbos. These guys are authorized dealerships for Garrett

i called a couple of local shops here in so cal who used their turbos, and they said this company is good. So i sent my turbo in for them to see if they could R&R it (shipping was $7.49 fed ex ground thru my work). They did an estimate to change all the internal parts to garrett parts, balance, rehone, and new seals. The toll came out to $520. I know some places would have done it for cheaper $300 or so, but i wanted quality... cheap doesnt last

If you figure, this is not bad compared to the price of a new garrett turbo. It came back (their turn around is one day so i got it there and back in 5 days over a weekend too) looking brand new with zero shaft end play with full garrett parts. The only part not garrett now is the housing, which they said they would have put a garrett housing on for free but the fitment was different so i opted to not.

Im going to install it tonight and ill let you guys know how it turns out, and if High Tech Turbo is a good place for turbo work to be done

You paid way too much for that. You can rebuild turbos for under $100. Some people even will balance the unit for like $15..

Unless they used all new wheels and center section. Even then its not worth what you paid to rebuild. Sorry to say.

i think they did use many new parts. but still not much less than a brand new turbo. doesnt matter though it will work whats done is done

so you paid hundreds of dollars more for a real garrett than what a garrett sells for?

price of fake garrett turbo from ebay=$200-300

that blows so:
price of rebuilding with garrett parts=$520

total:$700-900

price of a brand new real garrett:$525-650

that's gotta suck

on ebay they sell a t70, all over ebay, i ragged the seller the other day because they call it a t70 and then it has a 60mm wheel and then they call the EXHAUST INLET FLANGE, a "T70 INLET FLANGE"!!!! WTF IS THAT!!!!!!!!

Its funny how before when you ask if anyone knows of someone who can do the work, no one has suggestions, and afterwards, everyone has their $0.02

But thanks for the info Spoolinmatt, i can give majestic a try next time.

I put the turbo on and it boosts alot smoother and a bit earlier than before.

if it was an Ebay turbo, there is no point in rebuilding it. You gambled to save some money and now it bit you in the ***....do it right and buy a REAL turbo

lol, I tried one of those junk turbos.....and it lasted a grand total of 150 miles. Pure crap. I did though have my PT 61mm I sold gone through by forcedinductions and they rebuilt it for $335 which including balancing as well.

you just got your anus pounded. 550 will get you a brand new garrett from the factory.

Hey, i just posted this to help, the post topic does not say "DID I GET RIPPED OFF?"

like i said, i just wanted to see what kind of work costs what kind of money, if the same people flaming now would have had better advice before i sent off the turbo, the result would have been different

You shuold really find out what the MSRP or cost for that matter is first before posting nonsense that you read on this forum from other shall we call... misinformed individuals...

Materials and labor alone for a turbo cost around $500

How are we misinformed when we can go right to the sponsors section and find new real garrett turbos for $525-575 brand new. Don't take it the wrong, way man.. lesson learned.

The only thing that is good about hightech turbo is the name. LOL I have been building turbo cars here in Utah for about 5 years now and i still have not bought a turbo from them and they are about 5 blocks from my house. I have bought a couple wierd mics parts but thats it.

Btw, If you want a good turbo then just get it from Full-race, Phoenix turbo, Turbo elements and precision. Or me lol!

No kidding. Now you're stuck with a good turbo that still has the chance of the EPOXIED housing cracking in half. $520 isn't bad considering its basicly a whole new turbo and you also paid for labor, but they probably just took a new turbo, slapped your old housing & plate on, and threw that old **** out. If it took them 5 days to do that, I'd hate to see them do a real rebuilt. Also, all they have to do is rebalance the old comp wheel and slap that on a t3 to make a hybrid for $0. I'm sure they were happy to help you out...

FYI-- Turbo rebuilds only cost around $300 if ALL the componets are still good (turbine wheel & shaft, compressor wheel, housings and center section.) If some of those are bad then it can easily cost $500 to rebuild a turbo.

HTT is a great company. They have some really great custom turbos for the Diesel market.

He said 5 days turn around, i believe he meant he got it back five days after sending it to them, including a weekend.... they must be close..
