it doesnt come from the head its blow in the crank case..

up into the valve cover.. the lil o rings under the valve cover .. pressure builds up

pops the wire off ...

Or sometimes where the spark plug is crimped ... they leak ...

We seem to be getting a little off topic here...anyone else care to share their ignition setups?

i had both 8mm and 10mm Magnecore's before, and never had a problem with them popping up on the "valve cover side". they fit nice and snug in there. OEM i never had a problem with either. the Msd's just seem to jump out of their hole's

I had 10mm and they popped off the Distributor side actually, mine fit snug at the plug also.

Does it seem like they pop off because they are too short? Or is it the terminal where it plugs into the spark plug? I personally have never had problems with the wires, so let me know what it is...

thats a good question. the msd wires, "seem" to fit good when installing them, but they will pop off for no reason. maybe the black piece at the top needs to be a bit bigger, so its tighter in the sparkplug hole. and on the distributer side, id say the rubber needs to be a bit "longer" so there is more surface area to grab onto the distributer cap. i dont know though, im no engineeer.

OH snap!

I'm wondering the same, though. Do stock ignitions last on high power cars?

Probably the odd man:

Jacob's Coil and Box.
MSD cap, rotor, 8.5mm wires.
Factory Exciter driving the system...

Went with Jacob's because I have it on my truck and it has been rock solid for well over 10 years.

Ok guys, new question: How many of you feel that MSD boxes prematurely wear out (i.e., burn out) the igniter?

Also, have any of you had an experience where after installing an MSD box, you have issues where the engine breaks up at higher RPM's?

Not had the igniter go out yet, but have heard many stories about it on here.

I have the MSD SCI box and the HVC coil, anything around ~15+ lbs. in the high rpms breaks up everytime. I didn't have this problem until I installed the box and coil. If I remove the box and coil, it goes just fine. Also, running MSD plug wires, Cap, and rotor.

Only on 15+ pounds of boost? What plugs are you running?

MSD 8mm wires, MSD cap, MSD HVC II coil, MSD Digital 7

480whp @ 10,000rpm Pump Gas. 610whp @ 10,000rpm C16 (slipping clutch)

Heading to the dyno tonight to test the new pressure plate and see if it is gonna hold.

No ignition problems at all.

Nice setup, clean. Ours is actually similar to yours (looks wise). However, we can't rev to 10k yet .

I've had numerous problems with MSD stuff, everything from the 6a to the 10 plus. All the 6 series stuff seems really hit and miss, especially the digital stuff. The digital 7 seems like the best bet for performance, but still not very reliable. The 10 Plus, don't even know if you guys still sell it, sucked, period. Went through 4 boxes in a matter of two days. First one fired 1 spark, second one ran for about 2 min., third made it to the event and misfired the whole time, and the fourth did the same. I honestly cringe every time i get to the dyno and someone has an msd box on the car, 50% of the time there's misfire issues with it. I don't know why or what it is, all i know is that changing it or going back to stock will solve the problem majority of the time. Maybe you can shed some light on the reliability issues with them?

With the 6AL box and HVC blaster coil, I would fry an ignitor in about 3-4 months (approx 3500 miles). I just keep replacing them because there was nothing I can do. This was with a 230WHP NA setup revving to 9200RPM using PowerFC as engine management. The ignition worked great and was reliable, and it kept working for 4+ years of abuse.

On the digital stuff though, like Tony1 says, didn't turn out so good.
