high mileage - safe to boost?
im sure this has been answered before, but i couldnt locate the thread. i got a d16y8 with 165,xxx. my question is, would this be safe to boost? if not what i can i do besides a complete engine rebuild to make it safe and reliable. i.e. new valve seals, pistons, head gasket, ect. thanks everyone!

A good place to start would be a leakdown and compression test. That will give you a very good indication as to the overall health of the engine.
Realistically, I would say it's a crapshoot. Boosting and cheap cannot coexist. It's like trying to mix Jews with Palestenians. It just ain't happening...

comp test, if its good boost it. if the motor smokes a little so what, if it smokes bad i wouldnt bother.
my first setup was a d15b7 that had 265k on it, ran 10psi on a decent hmt setup on it for awhile. 10k miles on a basemap, sold the turbo setup and the motor still ran for another 15k. then the car was sold, tranny blew and it got junked. the motor was still in running order when junked.

yeah you can definately boost it. do a compression and leakdown first though to make sure its healthy. look for consistancy and id say compression of above 180psi. after that get it tuned well, this is key
there is a chance that not too long after you get boosted you might experience headlift, necessitating some arp headstuds. not a bad idea to throw the headstuds and new hg in when installing the turbo kit. its only 150 dollars in parts

the guy who posted under me supplied my basemap lol
also whats worked for me is dont beat the living **** out of it, especially when something isnt working correctly. at the track is a different story.

It will work if the motor is decently healthy. Just don't get greedy with boost.
I just tuned a D16Z6 with a ~46trim t3/t04e with a stg3/.63ar hotside. It was maybe 144k miles, and took 11psi like a champ. I used some really conservative timing, since the owner didn't want to blow it up before he got a spare motor.
FYI his friend with an awd DSM @20psi only pulled ONE CAR on his car @4psi. The DSM also ejected the dip stick, which then sprayed oil everywhere - and it caught on fire. DSM's FTW.
