High Flow Cats - Can They Pass Emissions?
Hey guys
Ive got a turbo d16, currently running open downpipe, emissions time is coming up and I need to go so im making an exhaust from scratch.
Currently I have pretty much all of my exhaust made of 2" pipe with some flew sections and a cherry bomb turbo oem style muffler and a cherry bomb resonator (both were close to free)
Now I need a catalytic conveter
Im going to have a 3" electric cutout exhaust and that will be closed at the time of the test but I need a cat, I was planning on getting an oem, but I thought that might be a huge power loss when driving around with the cutout closed.
Should I go with an oem catco replacment or should i go ahead and can a cheap high flow one off of ebay?
Will a used cat work ok?
Thanks for any info

They should pass the sniffer just fine with proper tuning. Spend the $200 and buy a new cat though, they don't last nearly as long as OEM.

I passed without a cat., just get a good tune.
Does not hurt to think up a good excuse why they should not run it on the rollers either... like nice wheels with short tires, car too low to the ground, monster clutch that is really hard to drive, story about how they screwed up your car last time, etc.

It depends on the state. In MA, we have California emission sstandards. Nobody will pass without a cat, period. Even AWD cars that don't go on the dyno and only require a 2 speed idle test can't pass with no cat.

Do they actually let you not go on the rollers if your car is lowerred and you have a 6 puck clutch and everything?

Did not know they were so strict about emissions there.
You could just hollow out a stock cat or cheapy ebay one... as long as it passes the visual inspection cause you appear to have one on the car.
