Default Help me Decide, 2.5" or 3"

Hola Boys and Girls ...

I currently have the Greddy 18G kit on my car and its time to do the exhaust. I'm getting a 2.5" downpipe made from Tony @ Jotec (whwoaooaoo ) and now Im getting in on the group buy and I can't decide. The difference from 2.5" to 3" is only 20.00 so its not about the money. In this case its more about over kill.

My goal is around 250/260 whp.

So do I get a 3" high flow cat, 3" Stainless Steel cat back piping and a 3" ES Oval muffler
Or
a 2.5" high flow cat, 2.5" Stainless Steel cat back piping and a 2.5" ES Oval muffler?

Some of you guys say bigger is better (duhh) but its not like my car is pushing 300+ HP there this would really impact it.

Also I want to be as quiet as possible and I know most 3" systems are louder and I also have to keep in the back of my head NY State Emissions.

Comments are welcome Thanks!
- Fred

What's up Fred!

I would go with the 3" mainly for better spool time, BUT then again it's a small turbo with the 18g. All things considered, mainly the NY emission and what not, play it safe with the 2.5" set up.

Basically, will there be a big difference as far as power goes between a 2.5" or 3" setup for 250whp/260whp? I'd go 3" also, but I don't know if the cops around here would like that. And we know Cali emissions sucks.

Id just go with the 3 inch, cause if you ever wanted to upgrade to a better turbo, etc, u would have the benefit...

Well I'd probably be the only one on here that would suggest 2.5, because i cant stand a loud exhaust system. I have a greddy evo and I'm running w/ no cat. It is very quiet, and I need it to be, because when I rip the top off in my sol, I don't want to be hearing an extremely loud exhaust.

Either way you can't go wrong really, but 3" will net you faster spool times, and a bit more HP.

i dont want to make a different thread so ill post here.

what about for a 210-220whp set up? is 3 inch exhaust piping just overkill? my friend is saying 2.5 inch will do. but like Fred, 3 inches is just a few bucks more.

and Fred, do u have any pics of the oval muffler you are looking at? i REALLY want the sleeper/"go away cops" look and anything that doesnt look stock really discourages me.

and lastly, does the exhaust piping HAVE to match the muffler inlet? i/e. 3 inch piping wouldnt work too well on a muffler with 2.5 inch inlet? bottleneck affect?

someone elaborate please

EDIT: 2000 gsr..i have a t3/to4e with 2.5 inch DP with hondata s200 and will be my daily driver. so dont want a "n/a-bumblebee exhaust" sound either

if noise is of much concern go 2.5". 3" will probably make a lil more power and support any future mods as well. I went w/ 3" on my set up bascially for the potential it added.

3" is better for spool up and power. I have noticed that when I switched over to a 3" the car got quieter as compared to my 2.5 ". I guess it was because of my huge *** reasonator too..

With all this talk about a 3" setup. I'm kinda changing my mind, then again...it will probably be too loud for me and cops will just hassle me.

Since you have a GReddy kit, go with the 3"

I just got mine from Mike put on last Friday, it's actually quieter than my 2.5", it's just deeper. I had a Tanabe RM and now I have the 3" ES oval style, everyone says it's quieter and deeper. HTH

Sweet 3" sounds like a plan Fred! If you lived here I would tell you 3" handsdown. Since your in NY I don't know what emissions and cops are like, those are the main reasons I suggested the 2.5".

Have fun man!

definitely 3... but im more worried about the loudness over here in cali.. so i chose 2.5... which probably doesnt make much of a damn difference in sound... so 3 is the way to go.

What's up Fred? Will the 3" fit with the Greddy? You might want to double check on this. I'm getting mine done locally, but going with 2.5". I know I told you to stick with the stock downpipe (I'm a hypocrite!). 3" might be overkill for the Greddy, though. Consider the boost creep problem associated with the internal wg. Have you decided what you'll do about this or are you just going to take your chances? Did FalconGSR ever put his turbo back on after porting out the wastegate? There were a couple of ideas being thrown around, but I never heard any success stories.

I'm a little confused about something. You had your kit installed by Art, but you live in NY? Did you drive down to Texas for the install or did you used to live there?

BTW, what is an ES muffler?

OKay, Im gonna get that bitch welded shut and go with an external WG setup
Also Im getting a 2.5" Downpipe made from Tony @ Jotech. Thats why I said 2.5" inlet to the cat and a 3" outlet for the "cat-back".

I was in Texas as an Intern For Motorola, so when I got the turbo I drove up to Dallas and stayed at Art's place.

Es I dunno it looks kinda like stock and has a better flow than stock, and yeah its cheap too

I still don't know, HELP. I think 3" tho ....

i'd say 3 for your car since i know you have dreams of high boost and a possibly better setup. i'm sure you have your own ways of dealin with the cops and if you're worried about emissions gimme a call

Oh, I didn't know you are going with the external wastegate. You left those important details out. In that case, go with the 3". Absolutely. I'm really interested, please give more details about this! Where did you find a manifold? Are you getting a Tial?

I was in Texas as an Intern For Motorola, so when I got the turbo I drove up to Dallas and stayed at Art's place
Don't you mean down to Texas? That's a hell of a drive. I hope the turbo helped you on the drive back home!
