Help with main/rod bearing sizing (ACL)...
Hi All:
I have my engine (87 D16A1) disassembled at the moment and am going to get new bearings for it. I want to get some of the ACL bearings that Earl is selling:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=203604
I am not sure what to do about bearing sizing though because my bearings have several different sizes.
After disassembling everything, I looked at the stamping on the block and the numbers on the crank and found that the engine came from the factory with the following main bearings.
Journal #1: C2 = Green (crank pulley side)
Journal #2: C3 = Brown
Journal #3: B2 = Yellow
Journal #4: B3 = Green
Journal #5: B2 = Yellow
Using the other set of crank stampings and the numbers of the rods, I can see that my engine came with the following rod bearings from the factor.
Rod #1: B2 = Yellow
Rod #2: C2 = Green
Rod #3: B3 = Green
Rod #4: A3 = Yellow
I am installing a brand new set of Eagle rods into this engine and I believe those are all size "3" from Eagle.
Here is the main bearing chart for reference:
I am not sure what to do about the ACL bearings because my rod bearings are 2 different colors and my main bearings are 3 different colors. Getting Honda bearings would be easy (and expensive), but the sizing used by ACL is different.
Help?
Thanks,
Sonny

I'll bump this up for you as I'm interested as well
If someone (earl) can clarify this sizing issue, I'm ready to buy as of yesterday

TTT
I know that there has been a lot of interest in these bearings. What are you guys doing for sizing?
Thanks,
Sonny

Re: Help with main/rod bearing sizing (Arturbo)
How does the ACL sizing work though? I don't think you can pick color codes like with the honda bearings.
I'd just go with honda. These sound cheaper, but if you can't get the right size, what's the point?

Re: Help with main/rod bearing sizing (dustin)
you have to buy all kinda of sizes then size them accordginly thats what you should do with most aftermarket bearings.

Re: Help with main/rod bearing sizing (b18bturbo)
Earl said they come in "standard size", "25 over", and "50 over" or something like that. I guess I don't understand what "standard size" corresponds to on the Honda chart. The Honda main bearings are in .0002" increments, too, right?

FYI:
Rocket just posted some info about the ACL bearings here:

More info from Rocket about ACL bearings...
Sonny (12:58 AM 6/13/2002):
So lemme get this straight. The ACL "standard" size is roughly equivalent to "middle" of the Honda bearing chart? Most of my bearings are B2/B3/C2/C3 which is right in the center of the chart. I will be ok using a "standard" ACL bearing for all of them?
What about the rod bearings? I am using new Eagle rods on this crank and I believe the Eagles are all Honda "size 3".
Thanks,
Sonny
Rocket (1:04 AM 6/13/2002): Yes you should be okay. Just check using plastigauge and make sure you have at least 0.001 clearance. Optimal clearance is 0.0015-0.0017 for daily drivers using 10w30 oil.
Sonny (1:10 AM 6/13/2002):
Ok, thanks. What if the Plastigage shows that the clearance is say.... 0.0023 or even .0010 (for example). Do I have the option of getting a bearing that will bring the clearance closer to spec or am I forced to run it "loose"/"tight"?
If you don't mind, I will post the contents of this conversation on the ACL bearing thread in the Forced Induction forum. Several people there have the same questions that I do and they are seeking answers so that they can make an educated decision.
Thanks!
Sonny
Rocket (1:16 AM 6/13/2002): Not a problem. Mix in a Honda bearing on the minor thrust side. That would be upper mains and lower rods.
A little loose is better than tight. Oil flow past bearings is very important to the life of the bearing.
Sonny (1:17 AM 6/13/2002):
Thanks again for the info, Rocket!

Re: Help with main/rod bearing sizing (Sonny)
Sonny where do you live in the Bay Area. I grew up in Sunnyvale and worked at Great America one summer.
My family is still there and my brother is a mechanic for the City of Santa Clara. He trips out everytime he comes down and sees my garage with a **** load of Honda parts, mostly trannies at the moment.

I've spent most of the last 3 years in the Pleasanton/Livermore area, but I grew up in Orange County (Garden Grove/Stanton/Anaheim). I still miss So Cal at times, but not all of the traffic or smog!
Thanks again for your input on the bearings, Rocket.
