Default Help... looking for a budget turbocharger / setup

I have a stock B16, am not looking for much power, probably around 200 whp? I am not too picky on power but I cannot stand driving the B16 in the city. It is a daily driver and I want a reliable set up. I already have a chipped P28 and know who will be tuning it. Finding used parts in Ontario CA is a bit tough...

Is there a guide on how to buy used turbo? Which turbochargers can I use off DSM, Saabs, Volvos, etc (year and model so I can look it up on car-part)? Otherwise, where can I buy a rebuilt Garrett (don't know which application is best for me, I do mostly high speed city driving)?

Can someone suggest relatively cheap but decent quality log manifolds (compatible with AC/PS) and waste gate. I searched and found SpoolingPerformance and Tial but I am wondering if there is cheaper solution. For downpipes, is it best to buy it from the same supplier of the manifold or have a custom one from an exhaust shop?

For injectors, does it matter if its DSM blue top or black top 450? I do plan to use eBay intercooler and charge pipes, and possibly BOV since many on HT are using it fine (after minor adjustment).

Thanks in advance!

For the DSM blue or black top is fine just dif years. As far as budget turbos stock applications you are limited as most are really small and will die in the top end on you but a 16G DSM one from a Evo would work,a Holset HY35[Dodge cummins pickup auto 2001+] its a fair size but can be found for cheap used or if you can find a T3 from a Thunderbird[1986>] that would work .I have used many SSauto wastegates without any problems just check its assembled properly but others seam to have lots of issues with them so maybe find a used Tial.Mani there is a couple cheap ones out there like Meutek,Blox etc that i think clear AC and PWs but i dont have any personal experience with that. Both are good cheap sturdy manis that wont crack and drop your turbo or wastegate onto the freeway Down pipe is easy enough to fab or a local exh shop can for pretty cheap just get a flange for the turbo exh side and put everything on and bring it down to the local muffler shop

Go & get SSAC.
It'll last you and can't complaint for the price $ for a complete kit.
& just make sure you run a chip ecu.

Oh yea cross your fingers that the kit holds

Although I said budget, I doubt I would want an eBay budget kit for couple hundred.

If I cannot find a stock turbo application, where can I look for value name brand turbochargers. Garrett seems to be popular but what about the other brands like Turbonetics and such. The Garrett Super 60 seems like a good price, what else would be a good choice for my stock B16? Where can I buy these at a good price, even rebuilt ones. Is a Tial wastegate crucial or can I skimp and get something cheaper with decent quality.

So the Meutek is A/C compatible?

For 200whp on a B16, you could get a volvo/saab T3 (50trim), aka ".42/.48". You'd hit 10psi before 3500rpm, and make 200whp with 10-12psi no problem.

The best 'small' turbos for Hondas in which the goal is under 300whp (and aren't insanely expensive):

t3/t04e 46trim
t3/t04b s-trim
16g td04
t3 60trim

Thats the list in terms of power, greatest to least, but it also depends on the turbine and AR #'s. You can find t3 60trims for under $500 new, and find s-trims for even less rebuilt, or get a .42/.8 T3 with a rebuild & upgraded compressor (common is 60trim and S-trim). I have two .42ar T3 compressor housings made to fit t04e 57trim wheels...

I personally had this setup(on my old car)

5-bolt discharge 50 trim
Tial 38mm wastegate
Drag Gen 3 manifold

on my b16. I loved it and if I ever decide to turbocharge my Si, that'll be the setup.

Thanks for the replies... much appreciated.

If anyone can post where and which turbocharger to get, it would be great.

I am going to pickup the Meutek cast manifold + elbow + Tial 38mm wastegate (do I need a wastegate flange for this setup)?

As for injectors I will get eBay rebuilt blue tops
Intercooler - eBay 28x7.5x2.5" (Bar and Plated) w/ DIY pipings
BOV - eBay RFL (no diaphragm = less chance of leaking?)

Not sure about the rest, time to get back studying.

Does the dump tube from the WG go to the downpipe? Is it better to buy a prefabbed dump tube and down pipe or just have an exhaust shop custom one up.

I am browsing for turbochargers and managed to find BlaastPerformance (previously bookmarked) on eBay. They are selling remanufactured the T3/T04B 63 trim (0.60a/r; turbine 68 trim .48 a/r and the T3 60 trim (compressor 0.60 a/r; turbine 68 trim 0.48 a/r) for an attractive price. Which of the two would be a better choice, I would assume the T3/T04B will offer more power.

I am definitely going with the Meutek exhaust manifold, the more I research, the more I am confident.

Does it matter if its 5 bolt or 4 bolt? I read that the Meutek manifold with the 5 bolt will have better clearance.

the best bang for your buck is a 14b turbo off of a 1st gen dsm, ebay cast manifold, and exhaust shop downpipe, with the stock actuator you wont need to purchase an external wastegate and 8-10 psi should get you the power you want reliably.you will need an adapter plate to fit the dsm flange to the t3 flange but the whole setup can be had for 500 or less easily,i only paid 50 dollars for my 14b and it is in very good condition and pulls hard

would the 14B be good for a B18B?
Also, what would I need to use for a search term to find a 14B turbo?

A 14b is small on a D series and too small for any B series IMO...it would boost very quickly and fall off in the higher RPMs. I personally wouldnt use it. The smallest i would go is a T3 .42/.48 or a 16g. The 16g's can be found on stock Evo turbo setups....another popular one is the .60/.63 found on the turbo Thunderbirds

8-10psi wont make jack **** for power...IMO it wont pull hard whatsoever because you'll hardly make 220whp.

yeah meutek is AC compatible, that picture is my car, the only reason i dont have AC is because it never came with ac and the owner before me tried to rig some **** in there that was soo bad, he had ac lines going over the valve covers so i just ripped all the ac **** out... where'd ya get that pic of my car anyway?

Who needs AC anyway...the best thing i did for my car was removing the AC. It makes working on the turbo setup 100x easier since there is less crap to work around

Ohh old thread.

I bought a Garrett T3 Super 60 .63ar for $445 from VSRACING

Next month I am going to get a log manifold/downpipe/dumptube

I weighed out the cost savings from Cast and Log... LOG seems a better choice since
Cast Manifold (Meutek 150 + 40 for elbow, UGR 185)
+100 for 5 Bolt Discharge Turbo
+200-250 for Downpipe
+75-125 for Dumptube

Whereas a log setup would be 575-650.

^^Sounds like you've got it all under control. What log setup do you plan to go with?? I had a SPoolin log manifold on my first turbo setup and loved it...

The 14b is on par with the .42/.48

I'm sure you'll be happy with the 60trim. You may want to swap to a .48ar housing if its mainly for the street (and only want 200whp). You'll have to run like 5psi to only get 200whp.

Since I have a B16A2 I was advised to go for the .63 a/r.

http://forums.evans-tuning.com...=2743

This guy hits full boost on his B18C1 at around 3K at 6psi, so I should hit full boost slightly later. I thought about it, I do not want to be boosting all the time since I will just burn fuel like crazy around the city. So when I do want power, I'll rev it higher.

Some people recommend .48, some say .63, oh well, the turbo is on its way.

Anyways the rest:
DSM 440cc injectors (cleaned and tested) (150)
Intercooler Kit / Piping (w/SSQV flange) (200)
HKS SSQV (175)
Tial 38mm WG (don't know what spring to get) (215)
Stealthmode Oil Lines (75)
Flat Rate Street Tune (already have socketed P28) (300)
2.5" Custom Exhaust (350)
Several 500KM round trips to Buffalo from Toronto (hard to assign a value since I'll use it as an excuse to take GF out for cross border shopping)

I've been trying to buy used log manifold but the hassle associated with finding a matching downpipe and recirculated dumptube isn't worth the savings. That leaves me with the option of buying a used WG, BOV, Intercooler, and Charge Pipings. The used turbo parts market in Toronto is not great or maybe its not in season.

Hmm their website shows 150.

But I already bought a 4 bolt T3 Super 60... would this fit while making it A/C and P/S compatible? I am not sure how big these turbochargers are but some guy had a T3/T04E and shaved the block such that the flywheel was exposed.
