Default Help on homemade manifold / downpipe

I'm getting my turbo stuff together for this summer. Right now I have my DSM 450cc injectors, DSM 1g BOV, VAFC for hack, and attempting to modify a volvo intercooler. Now to get to the point:

My dad has been welding for god knows how long, probably a good 25 years. He's been able to make up everything I've ever needed in the past. But the type of welding he does never involves car so it's not exactly his territory. We already decided he'd have no problem with the downpipe, it's a simple job. What type of piping should I run (I don't know the terms but am I looking for a certain 'schedule' or 'gauge'?) I'm 2.5" everywhere from cat back and plan on running a large T3. As for the manifold, does anyone have pictures of some simple manifolds we could try to copy, I don't want to make him do some crazy manifold with 100 bends.

Footnotes:
1st Homemade Manifold anyone have pics of theirs?
What type of piping to use for manifold/downpipe how thick?
Anyone have a good dealer for flanges? Thanks

I would use 3" for the downpipe using the T3.

You can usually find a template for the flanges depending on application and get your father to use a slab of steel. Right?

Also, check out Tinker219's custom manifolds. He does good work and maybe you could get some ideas.

Hope I could help a little.

Now that you mention the flanges thing, we do have access to a CNC machine at his work so I wonder if we could just pop some out. He's not up right now, I'm not a welder but I remember him saying something like he has all sizes of mig wire but doesn't have access to a tig welder which would look a little nicer.

EDIT: Sorry for all the questions but would the 3" downpipe to 2.5" cat back cause a problem with exhaust turbulance?

I wouldn't imagine. I am going to do the custom 3" downpipe on 2.5" catback with a 14b and 2.24" IC and Turbo pipes. I think it would handle just well, but I'm also NOT an expert.

But, let me look around, I'm sure I can find a DIY for an turbo flange.

EDIT: Here ya go, this might give you an idea.

When I did my own downpipe I just used normal exhaust piping, 2.5". It was a t25 and bought the flange off of roadraceengineering.com (don't know if that's the right addy) but I'm going to do another set up, and I just bought a MIG welder and want to try to make my own manifold too, so I'm also interested in where the hell I can buy a D series exhaust flange.

Thanks for the link, still looking for some pictures of either log style ones or other simple designs. Funny thing is I'm almost postive there is a 2 inch thick McMaster Carr catalog in my basement, have to go check it out.

The head flange you are going to have to get made or buy one from Tinker219! Search his posts and you will find pics of his diffenent styles(log or Full-race) GooD luck. And As for a 3" dp, It is not nessicary, especially if you are only using 2.5 exhaust

What is about the cheapest price for a B series to T3 manifold? I'm just looking at the numbers and

B series flange 60
T3 Flange 20
Piping 30?
and labor

So I guess if there is anything out there around $200 it'd be worth just getting it, I'd still love to see some pics of some simple manifold designs.

Can someone help me out with my homemade manifold order. I plan on building a log style one, So I need the (2) 90's and the (2) T's. Can I order these pipe pieces from McMaster Carr? Does anyone have any part numbers?

I'm going to be running a T3 off of an 80's Ford Turbo Coupe, I believe it is internally wastegated, would that mean that I do not have to have the extra pipe that you have for the wastegate? Any suggestions? Thanks for the pic

I am using an svo .60 .63 ar turbo.

And my plan to run an external wastegate is buy a 5 bolt flange with and open waste gate hole. Then weld on an elbow with 35mm tial flange that way I can mount my wastegate.

I guess that how people with Grand Nationals are doing it. So thats what was recomended to me
