Default Help diagnose why this engine had oil problems!

Help needed to diagnose this problem... Over the winter my buddy's motor was pulled and checked over. The main bearings had some bad wear so they were replaced. The rod bearings were fine and re-used. The motor was re-built with new head gasket, oil pump, oil pan, oil pan gasket, etc and new turbo setup. It made around 550 whp at 27 psi. The last run on the dyno it started smoking white. We figured turbo it was a seal going out. A few days later at the track the turbo locked up before it even made a pass. A new turbo was put on and it locked up shortly after. It was sent in and they said it locked up due to an oiling problem. The oil pressure gauge has always showed good pressure. The re-built turbo was put on and he went to the track. After a few passes a knocking noise started coming from the engine. After pulling the motor we found #4 rod bearing completely trashed. Over 70% of the bearing is gone. The big end of the rod is black and discolored from what we assume to be heat. The other rod bearings showed some grooves from dirt/meta but didn't look too badl. The main bearings showed grooves and didn't look too bad also, except for #5 which had bad wear. All of the exhaust side piston skirts were scratched up bad. After the pass, the Endyn breather can was full of oil and there was oil on the firewall. We assume the scratched up skirts and walls let combustion by and put pressure in the crankcase. The cam journals all look perfect. The oil pump had some small metal pieces in it and you can see pits where the metal got in the gear. Its obvious there was an oiling prolem. If the mechanical gauge was reading ok, the oil pump wasn't broke, and the oil level was ok, what happened?

I don't think it was too much timing. It had a good tune on it and I think was less than 17 degrees at peak boost.
