Default Help with bearing clearances.

Hello,

I'm building a d16z6 motor for boost, right now i'm Plastiguaging my main bearings. I'm trying to use ACL bearings since my block is calling for mostly GREEN bearings. But after checking the clearances here is what i get.

So for the 3 middle bearings i'm at honda service limit. Do you know what OEM color I should get which will bring me back closer to .0015?

B-3 Green .0015
A-2 Pink .0020
A-4 Green .0020
B-3 Green .0020
B-3 Green .0015

Thanks again

Thanks,

But would you happen to know what color bearings I should use to bring me closer to .0015?

use the 0.0015 spec. and retake the pictures. When use the .0015 spec. is much easier for us the tell.

dont rely on plastigauging one side of the journal. With the plasticgauge your only measuring one area and you can have a high or low spot on the journal. Use a mic and measure in the 4 places on the journal.

use a mic. did you check for OOR and Taper. plastigauge should be used for final clearance checks. did you check your rod bore as well?

Let me give you guys some background on this motor. I bought it off a friend cause he did a swap. As soon as the motor was out of his car I disassembled it and got all the machine work done to the block. I had the block bored, honed, and hotanked. Also had the crankshaft micropolished.

As far as measuring the journals themselfs with a mic unfortuantly I have not. I had not checked for taper and things such as that.
I guess I need to go buy a mic.

I had hoped my clearances would come out better, cause I had just help a friend build his d16z6 motor about 2 weeks ago and all his bearings speced out at .0015

Were all your clearances measured with ACL standard main bearings? I can help you but Im a little confused as you said your trying to use all ACL bearings but then listed a bearing color and clearance.

You'll need to order OEM bearings that are .0005" thicker than whatever bearing was used to plastigauge on 2,3,4.

since you dont have a mic. you can plasitigauge each side of the journals just use new bolts everytime to get the right torque. If you wanna a cheaper alternative even a venier caliper is better than plastigauge.

Muckman,

The bearings i'm using are ACL standard main bearings. I was just listing the bearing color what the block and crank was calling for according to honda. The clearences i've listed are the plastigauge results with the ACL standard main bearings.

So from the chart you have posted, it would appear i would need BROWN bearings? Since ACL supposed to cover GREEN for Honda bearings.

This would give me .003 tighter clearence?

Or i could go black but that might be too tight?

I can recheck the clearances on different parts of the journal, maybe today or tomorrow, but i'm a little unclear about what you mean by getting new bolts? I know what get new bolts means but, are you saying after I need new main bolts everytime I check my clearences?

Oh yeah just friggin throw them away every time you torque them. Hey if you wanna get that **** why not just buy a brand new engine from honda instead? *rolls eyes*

Heres what I recommend you order:
Main 2: Blue
Main 3: Blue
Main 4: Blue

This should yield .0015" - .0016" on mains 2,3,4.

Now Im not exactly sure on the factory specs for a D series but the factory service manual I have for a 5th gen D-series says mains 1 and 5 should be slightly (.0003") tighter with .0014" as the loosest spec. So if you want to get crazy you can order two Browns to reduce those clearances.

Also remember when you order OEM bearings you must order them in pairs as each bearing half is sold seperately.

You need new bolts becuase once torqued they will stretch giving wrong torque numbers. Same as with rod bolts and head studs.

Yeah I know why you said that. Im saying thats fucken nuts and nobody does that unless your a race team. Here in the real world nobody is going to throw away 10 main bolts at $8 a peice everytime you torque them down.

First off WTF are you doing a rebuild with out proper manuals? Stop being a cheapo and go buy a Helms manual for your car. I'm disgusted that you would even consider posting this question on a forum when you can perfectly buy a proper manual that answeres all questions and more. you should be ASHAMED! Slacker!!!!! (slacker for doing the job half @$$ed.)

Ryan,\
if he's using "crank" bolts, he can reuse the stock units up to 8 times. If i rememebr correctly. Also, plastic gauge is EXACTLY what Honda and the manual both call for. Not sure where you get your info from, but if your suing a dimpled or pited crank, you need to re-think your ideas of a good engine to be built.

Plasti gauge is just fine for measureing. you will need a helms for the proper bearing sizes.

Oscarmyer

From the HELMS manual that I OWN it does not say anything SPECIFIC about what bearing I should use. They simply suggest using the next bearing on the chart and recheck the clearances. I've looked through the whole manual and I have not found anything which states the measurement of each color bearing (which Muckman kindly provided). Why should I guess if the next bearing will give me the clearance I need when I can get the right color in the beginning by asking. If I did it exactly by the book I would need to buy 3 brown bearings check clearances, then buy 3 Black bearings, just to figure out I needed BLUE in the end. If thats being cheap then I'm sorry.

Hey but since you OWN 3 Helms manuals maybe you can show me the info that would help me? Hey and if you do find it i'll be the first one to admit I was wrong.
