Heat problem with MSD?
Hey guys,
I have been having some heat problems with my turbo prelude for a while now, and I always thought it was becasue the intercooler was blocking my radiator. I recently figred out that with my MSD Digital 6 out of the car, the car runs much colder. normally in traffic with the digital 6 and ss coil, the car gets up to 100 degrees celcius. Without the ignition the car barly gets to 90 celcius if it even gets that hot. I will probably take the ignition out when I retune the car, but can anyone help me understand why it is doing this? I have NQK wires, digital 6 plus, SS coil, and NGK bcpr7es plugs gapped to .040.
Thanks,
Josh

It sounds like when the ignition is installed your timing is too far advanced. If you are boosting then I recommend you gap your plugs down to a .030-.032.
Are your fans coming on at all? Have you checked? If they are, my bet is the ignition is advancing your timing too much. I had this problem a few years ago when I did not run the gm 3 bar map sensor to retard my timing under boost.
yea, the fans are coming on when they are suppose to. I could understand this if it was overheating while boosting, but it isn't. It is only when stopped or barly moving(not boost).

Just a thought but you should check and make sure you have good grounds. I remember a friend of mine had a problem similar to this and come to find out it was just a bad ground. So possible the ignition is creating ground noise and inconjuction with a bad ground the gauge is reading strangly.
