how does the gt40r compare to the PT71 GTQ in terms of POWER and spool up.

At those power levels that those turbos were designed for, honestly, spool up should not be a concern. Only power output. Those are NOT street/dragstrip type designs. Those are the serious almost track only condition turbos.

Check with a couple of the racers that have used the PT71-GTQ. I know Cort used it, but he is doing something different now from what I uderstand. The PT71 will allow you to get about 80 hp more in the bigger trim.

Good luck,

Funny you posted this. I had a Pt71GTQ on order THEN the GT40R became available. I asked a couple of good tuners and engine builders, top turbo guys which one I should do. This is what i was told "Do you want to get down the track faster? Then GT40R! If you want to be a dyno queen then PT71GTQ!" I chose the GT40R but I dunno if the above statements are necessarily true BUT we shall find out REAL SOON!

sooooo, the gt40r will produce a more useable powerband and make about the same power at per say 30psi @ 8500, whereas, the PT71 GTQ will produce more power when revving the **** out of the engine.

I put the GT40R on and I could only run a 12 second pass. I put the PT71 back on and ran five 10.00s in a row and turned into Joe Simpson. J/K

No really....I think the GT40R will destroy the PT71 in spool time and reliability. But my presonal PT71 will destroy any GT40 out there. My 71 is a little different then the current PT71's.
There will be some new 71mm turbo's floating around soon from a couple different companies that will be tested soon. You guys will be the first to here about the test results.

Cortney gave me a ride around the block when i was up in Utah in his hatch with a PT71gtq. Honestly that thing isnt laggy at all. Shes starts to spool mid 4000rpm and by a split second later its on the rev limiter with the front tires on fire. 480whp on pump gas (or something like that). It was super gnarly. I believe cort dynoed 803whp with that thing (search in the archives he posted it). Ran a 9.9 @ low ~150mph.

The same day we went out in another car with a gt40r, and i thought that was much lagger IMO. Still fast mind you...haha

Weird well one thing is the PT71GTQ that Cort has is only a .68 A/R turbine with housing with of course a GTQ turbine wheel then teh GT40R I have has a .95 A/R turbine housing and of course the GT40R turbine wheel which is bigger than a GTQ. I dunno we shall see if the GT40R is a good match on my motor, we should be dropping it in tomorrow or Tuesday!

Correct cort had the .68ar exhaust. It really did spool quick!!! You gotta report back and let us all know how the gt40r with the .95ar spools - thats a big turbo!!!

Usually I can get those in about a week or so, usually special order. Most people don't keep it in stock.

I have a PT72.. the spool time is kinda not cool ful boost @7000 rpm but with NOS it spools faster!! I would do a lot of research!

The GTQ turbine is a 79mm inducer/68mm exducer.

On the GT40R, I have found various specifications on the trim. The 73 trim GT40R is a 77mm inducer/65.8mm exducer. The 78 trim GT40 turbine is 77mm inducer/68mm exducer. There might also be an 84-trim GT40R, which would be 77 inducer/70.6 exducer.

The GTQ is larger then all but the 84-trim, which I'm not 100% sure is even avaliable.

Cort, I'm interested in hearing about these 71mm turbochargers coming out. I've been talking with a company about a turbo that meets exactly SFWD rule limits and it is targeted for high pressure ratios with reasonable spool.
