Default GT30R v. T04r?

A friend of mine is in the process of building an engine for his ride and turbo charging it (Cavalier Z24, to be exact). The engine is getting the whole piston/rod/ect. ect. ect. hookup, along with a custom turbo kit since there aren't a lot of options for his car when it comes to aftermarket kits.

He is shooting for 400whp, whether it be on pump or race gas, and we were debating between using the GT30R v. the t3/t04R with equal a/r's and trim levels. Which turbo would spool faster and how do they compare at similar boost levels?

The engine is a 2.4 liter with ported head, 9:1 compression, rev limiter set at 6.5k rpms. It's just easier to ask here since people in the J-Body community don't have too much experience with big numbers.

TIA

the gt30R should be good for 400whp i had that turbo in my type R
and i was making 380 whp on pump gas

i dont know mutch aboult cavalier or to4r i never used them before i always been a garrette guy and i always used ther gt series turbo

spool was descent on my 1.8 so i think it should be great on a 2.4

if he realy wants to make good power i would recomend going to the larger gt35R
but if he is only shooting 400whp i think the gt30R would be a great compromise spool time vs hp

hope this help PL

gt30r is ball bearing, so it will definatly spool faster. it also has better wheel desinges that will help spool and power. it an all around better turbo

we now have the TO4R available with the same dual BB chra as the GT30R, in your choice of T3 or T4 turbine.

however, i agree that for what he's looking for, the GT3076R would be the best possible choice.

At what a/r rating would the car make the most power with the best spool?

Would you prefer a GT3076R at a higher a/r rating (.86) over a GT35R at a lower rated a/r (.63)?

Thanks for the help guys, just trying to get the best combination we can before summer arrives

Since it's for the 2.4L engine, go for the .86 A/R housing.

The GT3076 or GT3257 would be best for the 2.4 litre. I've actually used both applications on the 2.4litre Ecotec and had some great response results, and good power to over 430whp with excellent response by 2200rpms.

I think the T67 would be WAY overkill for good response and just be used for bragging rights.

Agreed, especially with a 6500 RPM rev limit. You're talking about ~1500 RPM's worth of power.
