GT28RS vs. T3 60 Trim?!
Hi,
can someone tell me how different these two turbos are?
- spool up time
- top end performance
- how bis is the difference between the turbine/compressor sizes?
and, is the GT28RS the smallest GT Turbo which is available with a T3 flange?
Thanks
Malte.

someone correct me if i'm wrong but i think the gt28r has a t3 compressor housing where as the gt28rs has a t4. So... i think the gt28r is smaller but probably has same spool between the two.

when you go to ATPTurbo.com you see that the GT28RS is available in two options:
1) T25 Turbine flange and 5bold GT discharge
2) T3 Turbine flange and 5bolt ford discharge
from the garret cataloge you can see that the GT28R has same turbine flange then the GT28RS which is:
1.58 height and 2.87 width (don't know if inces or cm)
so i don't think the RS has a t4 flange... by the way i think its far to small to need a T4 turbine flange or housing...

WTF so much wrong information floating around in here.......
the gt28rs is rated at a max of 320HP....not 600 like stated above
the gt28r is good for around 280hp
the both the gt28r and rs come standard with the t25 flange.

GT28R and GT28RS both have a T25 turbine housing unless you get it with a T3 turbine housing. The RS has a turbine wheel which is .85mm larger then the R. Both have the same size compressor wheel which is 60mm.

AFAIK this info is wrong unless you are talking about twin 28RS' on a RB26DETT or something . You must be confusing the 28RS with the 30R or 35R. Otherwise show us a dyno of a 600WHP single turbo GT28RS on a B series motor.

Are you sure it's the wheel that is larger I thought it was the housing?
R = Ball bearing
S = S housing
if you need a turbo for a t3 I'd get a straight T3 depending on power goals.

the wheel is bigger... take a look at the garrett catalog, then you will see.
the GT28RS is available in a T3 case to fit as a bolt on for a t3 turbo... so this would not be the problem...
but i didn't have a precise answer to my initial qustion... :-(

Re: GT28RS vs. T3 60 Trim?! (mrx)
60 trim T3
Pros:
Cost
Availability
Its a Garrett turbo.
Cons:
Old technology
Journal bearings=crappy throttle response
Notes: Compressor efficency is pretty good but not not great.
gt28rs
Pros:
New GT wheel technology which offers more efficent, lighter wheels.
Ball Bearings for good throttle response
Its a Garrett turbo.
Flow more air than the 60trim T3
Cons
Cost
Compressor map isnt that wide or tall
Advice: Map the ******* compressor maps and take a look. Threads like this are ridiculous as you simply get assinine comments like posted above.

Re: GT28RS vs. T3 60 Trim?! (verbripe)
Thanks for this, but i can read compressor maps...
i don't know whats so hard to just answer a simple question. A compressor map won't tell me how big the difference realy is.
spool up time isn't a content of a compressor map, it just gives you an idea but not more on this.
top end performance... also... if the turbine is to small the best compressor map won't help.
and how big (in percentage) the difference of the turbine/compressor of each of this turbos are is also not readable on a compressor map...
whats so hard to say something like: the G28RS with xx AR / yy Trim will spool aprox. xxx rpm befor the T3 with xx AR / yy Trim
or a T3 with xxx AR etc. has a powerband from x to y rpm.
or a GT28 compressor is (just for example) twice as big as a T3 one...
i don't want exact numbers, just want to get a better feeling for both turbos.
if nobody knows, then nobody should post anything or we can discuss some ideas and find a answer together.

Re: GT28RS vs. T3 60 Trim?! (mrx)
A compressor map tells you exactly how big of a difference is. Thats where you are incorrect. Look at the compressor map and compare the choices. Its VERY obvious the compressor on the GT28rs is more efficent and offers a larger efficency range than the 60trim t3.
Now continuing in your research you could simply look at the compressor map and find the point at the given pressure you are running that enters the compressor map. This point you can assume will be the approximate point at which you read full boost.
So now we know how much the air the turbos will flow, the efficency at that point, and when the turbo will spool. We already know based on facts presented to us by our friends at turbobygarrett.com that ball bearings offer better throttle response. So what else do you really need to know?
I'm telling you right now, VERY few people on this site offer any valid technical support on chosing a turbo. People make assumptions that just because the trim is larger and it flows more air at some point on the map, that makes any difference in your setup. Its all *** backwards.
If you want stuff to read, read:
http://www.turbobygarrett.com/....html
http://not2fast.com/
http://www.holset.co.uk/files/...s.php
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo.htm
Ive read each site a number of times and each time ive read them I pick up a little more information. Dont become a victim of misinformation.

Re: GT28RS vs. T3 60 Trim?! (verbripe)
Thank you very much for that information verbripe,
but whats about the turbine? i think it effect the spool up time as well or not?
whats if you have a very small turbine? then you need less exhaust energy to reach a defined wheel speed as if you have a huge turbine.
all you mentioned is true, and that was also the information i had from the compressor map. but my question was more turbine related... you find very less real usefull unformation about how to read a turbine map and the sizes.
Because if you have a different exhaust wheel type things like AR and Trim are not compareable any more... that makes comparing the absolut size not easy unless you have worked with both turbos yourself or is there any possibility?
Thanks
Malte.

Re: GT28RS vs. T3 60 Trim?! (mrx)
I think the major difference between a t3 60 trim and gt28rs is money. The gt28rs is defintely a better turbo, but I don't know if it's really worth the money if you running less than 300whp. If you want a 300-350whp auto cross car, then I could understand getting the gt28rs.
I'm sure if I put a gt28rs on my car right now it wouldn't make a big enough difference to make up for my money loss, my t3 60 trim works fine and costs much less. If I had a built motor and it was a street/drag car I would defintely get something bigger than a gt28rs or t3 60 trim.
Oh and "1995Civic" you should get a rope and hang yourself...

The gt28rs is a lot bigger turbo than the straight T3. It is capable of up to almost
600whp as to the T3 is only capable of about 275 on a good tune. Also, spool-up times are different, as the gt28 spools later in the Rpm's around 4500-5k as compared to around 3k for a T3. However, this all depends on the trim (compressor) and the A/R (exhaust). </TD></TR></TABLE>

Pull your head out of your ***, log onto the garret website and show me where it is capable of 600whp. The site only rates it flowing 310hp and it is available with one trim and either a .52 or .63 compressor size if I remember correctly, so I dont know where you are getting your information there my friend. Also the turbo COULD make 600whp, on a car that already has 300-400whp to begin with.
The GT28R is essentially a T25/T3 hybrid...which means it spools quickly like a T25 but moves out the same amount of air as a T3 turbo. Perhaps you are thinking about a GT30R or a GT35R when you mentioned the turbo spooling around 4500-5000rpm. Around those revs is when the GT28R is making full boost not starting its spool.
