Default Greddy Turbo Question

Before you flame me about not searching i did and please dont flame cause i dont want to run a custom kit. That kit is is made for what i want and im getting it at a decent price. I need that carb# and im only looking for a nice fast spooling turbo that i can drive around town and occasionally have some fun with. But anyways back to my question does anyone know if you add a BOV, intercooler, turbo timer or boost controller to the kit, will that void the carb exemption. That is very important cause i need that carb exemption cause i dont know anyone that can do it for me if it wasnt carb exempt. Thanks in advance.

Hehe. Well you won't get flamed from me, anyways, I like the Greddy setup.

You can add all of those Items if you'd like, and the car will function great, but know this:
1)BOV - If it is not circulating back into the intake system you could violate CARB because of the fact that it is venting into the atmosphere (even though it's not charged w/ N02 gases, like exhaust, which is the whole point). At SMOG check you COULD fail visual. It's rather strange because the EDELBROCK kit is also CARB, but includes intercooler and BOV..

2) Intercooler - I've had varying experiences. Some officers look at it as illegal for visual, others don't know the difference. Since you're in SoCal, it's hard to guage, for I lived in the East Bay area, and never was plated in California, so it didn't matter either way.

3)Turbo timer and Boost controller aren't considered in CARB, so as long as you put the boost back to the ECU setting of the Greddy, you should be ok. Turbo timer is irrelevant....

I have heard that with the Greddy Kit if you add a intercooler and BOV it will fail. The BOV makes it illegal if it's not rerouted into the intake system. While the Intercooler will fail a visual inspection because of the cutting of the bumper and distance to the engine from the intercooler is smaller than it should be for front end colision purposes.

Thats good new i was more worried about the BOV cause im gonna have it to wear you cant see the intercooler cause it will be flat black. But how do i reroute the BOV so that ill pass the visual and smog cause thats most important.

bump for some more replies cause i just read another thread that was kind of unfinished and pretty much said adding an intercooler to this kit will make you not carb legal any more. Can anyone confirm what projectdarkblack said about the intercooler? Thanks in advance guys!

Hey what's that visual thing man ? I live in GA and haven't heard of such thing here .. Our emissions test has about 10 components, but no visual stuff in it.

However, if you need to hide that intercooler, I thinkg that it's a good idea to paint it same color as your front bumper As for the BOV - can't tell right now, but I'll ask here and there to see what I'll find .. I'm kinda new to turbos, but I'm about to buy the same GReddy kit for my 95' EX and I wanna pass that test as well

they dont do visual in ga. if your car is obd1, they put it on the rollers. if its obd2, they just pull the obd readiness test and pressure test the gas cap

when i got my greddy intercooler kit, the box outside had a sticker stating "legal for sale and use in california only on vehicles which may never be driven on public highway." it didn't come with any carb exempt sticker like the turbo kit. so i concluded that it must be illegal?

Why can't you just take off the intercooler(and BOV) before a smog test? I'd be suprised if some people with the other turbo kits don't take the whole thing off for the test...

Well im more worried about if i get pulled over by a cop! But im planning on painting the intercooler black so its less visible and just welding the bov to the intercooler piping like yehiknowrite said so when i go to get smog i can take the bov and intercooler and just slap the pipes that came with the kit back on just to pass. So i dont think im gonna worry about the intercooler anymore but if a cop looks at my bov will he write me up for that? I know they can write you up for anything but but do you think there is a good chance that they will write me up for that? Thanks in advance!
