Default Good OR Bad Turbo?

My friend is asking me to help him buy a used turbo from a seller. I know some stuff about turbo but i dont know how to spot if the turbo itself is good or damaged or leaking oil. Is the only way to find out is by opening it? Whats the posibilites of rebuilding and turbo? worth it? Any sugestion or comments that you can give me will help alot BTW the guy is selling the kit for less than 1k around 800 dollars.

shaft play is usually a sign of a bad turbo,

visible oil stains aren't any good neither...

yeah the 'fins' shouldnt wiggle

stick your fingers in the inlet and exhaust ports
and the shaft that spinns should NOT be able to move
side to side nor up and down, nor in and out..!

it should spin freely, but nothing else..

exactly what i was thinking....I havnt gotten a chance to look at the kit yet but all i know so far is that the turbo itself is a garret...what kits came out with a garret turbo? drag? revhard? I know that the kit is older that 3 years old... i think the guy is just trying to get rid of it.

Kit comes with mani, the turbo, IC (damaged i think) and some pipping.
