Default turbo leak

ok here's the prob, the turbo is smoking bad.. it has very minimal I/O shaft play like 1-2mm. I drove it down the road and it was ok, but smoking more, now I pop my hood and notice that there is no clamp in the middle of the turbo holding it together, it was coming apart. so would this cause the turbo to smoke out the exhaust side or would it have been caused by the minimal I/O shaft play? while it was sitting in my garage and I was starting it the turbo was together and that's when it was leaking oil out the down pipe and causing smoke. but that little drive that I did is what made the turbo come apart. so i'm confused as to weather think the smoke was because there was no clamp holding the turbo tightly together or is because the shaft play.. any help would be great, i'm a noob to turbo's. thanx

i think your turbo is borked. the clamp is what helps keep the turbo aligned, so no clamp= un-alignd shaft = damage.

you are probably looking at a rebuild.

oil in pipes = blown seals.

do you think i can just by new seal? i had the turbo checked out today and my buddy said there was very little shaft play and that it might need a rebuild, can i just buy a new seal or do i have to buy full rebuild kit?

ok the problem was, that the way the turbo was on my car the oil return was on top and the oil couldn't get out, so it just filled up and had no other way to go but out exhaust.. lol how dumb of me.
