Technically you could do it.
An old cheap turbo, Manifold, downpipe, and some charge piping. How effective would it be is in question.

Re: (youngbucker19)
pull a turbo off a junk car, get a log mani and if you know how to weld that will save you some labor $ for your charge pipes, chip the ECU yourself, basically doing all the work yourself will save you most of the money...that and getting used parts, make sure you find a turbo with minimal shaft play you gotta know what your lookin out for

JUNK YARDS!!
GS-T or GSX eclipsese, Evos, saabs, etc.
I'd stay away from the 1.8T Jettas or golfs b/c those are really small turbos (or if they're big, they're just regular on a huge chassis, I'm not sure which...)
as for manis, I never heard of the HX, u can probably use it, u can use the CX, the VX, and the HF manis (CX & VX from 92-95)(HF was 88-91)

This gave me inspiration to not spend 3500.00 on a "kit" or even 1200.00 on ssShittyDome from ebay.
I should be able to pull everything except fuel management for around 600.00.

you just have to be willing to do the work yourself and just start pieceing together a kit and not buy it all at once. i think the most i have ever spent on a kit was about 900 and that is with greddy type s bov, chipped ecu, .48/.60 T3 turbo, and CCA front mount, A/F and boost gauge and all the other crap that goes with it.
but just remember just because you can make a kit for around 500 doesn't mean that it is gonna be anything pretty. there are some parts you will not want to skimp on, you'll find out.
oh and HMT OWNES YOU, go check it out

dude, it's been posted sooo many times
http://www.homemadeturbo.com
thats where you need to go, read for a few months, and then proceed to build your turbo kit. you cant just jump right in to a turbo built, it'll waste time and money.
basically,
learn more about what parts are good/bad
learn the capabilities of your motor
learn what to do/not to do
learn. period.
and http://www.homemadeturbo.com , http://www.turbod16.com are the best places to do it.

I put together a small td04 turbo on a greddy mani and downpipe, along with a replica greddy bov and then some piping.. and all together I was in it maybe $450. And all I needed was the good ole missing link and fmu. Its all possible.

igore this guys comment about fmu and missing link, you can get injectors and chipped ecu for cheaper and they are 1000% better

the kits are cheap but the fmu and tuning is what gets you...plus youll need to upgrade your fuel system and replacement parts after everything goes wrong

like all these guys are saying. its possible. but like the old saying goes, "you can only be two at a time: fast, reliable, cheap"....if you do this it will not be reliable...and realistically if this is your first attempt at a turbo...i dont think you can do it under 500. you just dont know what to look for your first time...my advice just like everyone else's is to read up and learn before you think about buying. you'll end up regretting it if you dont
