Garrett T3 Inspection Questions
Hey all,
I'm a newbie to the Honda scene and the turbo scene. I have built a 280Z autocross racer but never finished the turbo motor. I've worked on muscle cars too, but nothing is cooler then a turbo'd import! I understand the basics of the system and what design I will start with. Soo.. that leads me to my next list of questions....
I just got this Garrett T3 from a buddy of mine. He pulled it from an 88' Saab Turbo. It 'looks' good, but I notice play when I push on the compressor side, both in-and-out and side-to-side. Not a lot and it is always spining smooth with no grinding. My questions are:
1. should there be any play with the turbine inside the housing at all?
2. if so how much?
3. is this sucker bad?
4. can it be rebuilt?..
Let me know what I should look for in a quality used turbo. The price tag is pretty good... not free, but what ever I want to buy it for.
My setup will be the T3 w/ Internal WG mounted to a aftermarket manifold. No intercooler in the begining, but that's because I will only run 5-6 lbs of boost on my stock 98' DX motor. I'll use a BOV (cuz it just plain sounds cool) and a rising fuel reg. Those are the basics.

Re: (mattssi)
The in and out play means it probably toast. I won't put a turbo with end play on any car. not worth the time. I have gotten away with using turbos with a fair ammount of side play with no oil consumption issues however

Re: (Bailhatch)
Cool, thankx for the tip.. Hey, I was just try to IM but I can't cuz I'm new. How much for a A/C compatible manifold for the T3. Even if this one is bad, I still like the style.
Do you think I should rebuild it or junk it?
