Default Found out how a blockguard works...

I grenaded my LS 2 weeks ago. I was running a STR blockguard w/stock sleeves. It did its job very well. Instead of my sleeves crack spectacularly, it held the sleeve together. That seems to be its purpose.
It did its purpose in my CRX, gave my turbo fever, I ran high 12s with 1.7 60fts.(personal goal). I am sad but I am more happy about whats to come....

I plan to re-sleeve, go standalone, go vtec, and go 2.0L the cheaper way.
Any other suggestions?

Wait. So the sleeves still cracked? But it was still held together, instead of shattering into bits and pieces? Whereabouts did it crack? Middle/Top/Bottom? And how much boost were you running?

Good luck on the next build.

Yes the sleeve cracked and held together. The crack runs from the top to about the middle of the sleeve on the intake side of #3.

I totally blamed myself for it breaking, I knew it would just not when. I was running 13psi on a warm night with stock timing. oh well...

nah its cool. Thats how I learned what I know now by being a part of this forum.

I was running for fuel:
Walbro 255
310s
cartech FMU(new piece)

Stock pieces:
ECU
Timing
rods(shot-peened)

Everything else I replaced, so it was like a brand new motor, ya know?

I just ran out of luck this time. I knew I was pushing the limits of detonation with 13psi. It was so damn fun though!!

I never dynoed. My best times at the track were 12.8 @111 and 12.9@112(this was against st00pids old civic). Both pulling 1.7 60s.

I would only run 13psi while racing. I daily drove at 7psi and hated it. I would get to 7psi by at least 3500RPMs then blah. 13psi was a great feeling.

what size turbo, with those trap speeds in a CRX, u were probably only making 250whp. Im surprised u cracked a sleeve at that hp level, u sure there wasnt anything else involved?

The turbo is t3/t4 .50comp. .48 hotside.
I am pretty sure there was no contamination or anything. I already went down that road last year.
It was a nice clean breakdown. I won, put her in neutral and hit the brakes. That was the last time the motor was running. It just died right in the middle of the street.
I think my rings were giving up. It was running hella rich too. I don't know. Its dead I say, dead.

My teg's engine is currently at the shop getting a blockguard installed as I type Its held up the sleeves in my D16Y8 boosted civic, even for those few couple days when I was running 1.6 bar when my HKS wastegate got stuck.. not a crack.. nothing. I would be scared to push anything above 10psi without one..

Was it the B18B or the B18A block; what FMU disk were you running at the time; and what was your compression ratio with the "new" pistons?

Nathan- weren't or aren't you running Link? I had no timing or ignition controls.

modvp-
It is a B18B with Arias dish pistons, 81Ts, compression was about 8.6:1, too damn low. The FMU was cartech's adjustable piece. You can set your own rise rate. A little clumsy but it works.

Actually that was against George's car.. I was just pitting for him. That sucks about the block though..

hey, ill bet your sleeves cracked because you had that block guard in it. Ive seen and once had my self a daily driven stock gsr motor turboed car that ran 12s no problems for over a year. Also I have boosted way more on a stock motor with no sleeves cracking. Just a thought for you...the block guard and sleeves are made of different metal right? All metals have different heat expansion rates right? well, if one heats up quicker then the other and puts more pressure on it, the sleeves are prone to crack, but thats just my thought.............Mike

That does make sense, but I have a question. Aren't stock "sleeves" two seperate metals? I thought the outer sleeve was aluminum, while the liner was a steel.
