Are you boring/honing the cylinder walls?

Well it's hard to say. If you're using the same pistons and you aren't altering the bore size, then there would be no reason to get larger rings... I think someone was telling you to get larger pistons, not rings.

But then again, you aren't supposed to rebuild a motor without boring or at least honing it. If you install new rings without honing the cylinder walls, the rings won't seat right.

If that's the case, you'd be better off not messing with the pistons/rings at all.

If the pistons look good (i.e. no excessive side-skirt wear) then what you should do is hone the cylinder walls and install new rings onto the pistons. Don't worry about that oversized-ring garbage, I don't know who told you that.

But definitely hone the walls when you install the new rings. It's important.

Basically, a typical engine rebuild entails a few simple things:

1. Replace main and rod bearings
2. Hone cylinder walls
3. Replace piston rings
4. Replace all seals and gaskets (including valve seals)

Do you have a Haynes manual? If you don't, then go buy one - it goes over basic motor rebuilding in rather good detail.
