Interesting stuff. I guess water lines are less of a hassle than oil lines since gravity or scavenge pumps aren't needed, but they're kind of pricey...

I wonder how long these turbos will last? It's a very sound concept, I just hope they applied the concept with longevity in mind. I really like that you won't have to worry about running the car for a long period of time after getting your EGTs really high. However, I don't run water lines on my turbo because I don't want my cooling system to take the extra hit from that...not sure if it could keep up under extended heavy load.

I guess if the bearings are larger and better material with tighter clearences and one hell of a high temp grease along with a larger water jacket in the center section for better cooling, then i could see it being done. I'm curious what kind of grease they use for such extreme temps that it wont cook

Im in for more info i hope this thred grows

Just read the website, sounds very interesting. They've seen to done things pretty wel but im no turbo expert. Sounds god on paper, matter more how it works in real world though.

but after only 50,000 miles? And if you say that's the average lifespan of a turbocharger anyway, folks, you're doin' something wrong here.

Comp turbo (formerly Innovative Turbo) is utilizing a self contained oiling lubrication system that doesn't require oil to be fed and drained into the cartridge to give bearings lubrication. They are not the first company to do this, but until there is a longer lasting , more viscous chemical than something petroleum based, they will be one of the few.

The old Turbo cessna personal aircraft used Rayjay turbos that also had self contained systems. Right now they are the only other company that encompasses this method.

The real issue that comes to mind when it comes to the use of this system is the concept of subsequent owners who may buy a used one from someone else. unlike more traditional turbochargers, (though this may come to some debate) you don't know if the previous owner was on the 10,000 mile, or 49,000 mile mark when he/she resells it to you, unless they accompany documentation that states that it was reserviced by Comp turbo.

Trudat, but I'm not sure that is a huge issue when they really have a corner on the market for anyone who would otherwise need a friggen scavenge pump setup...

If I was buying a used one I would automatically opt for the rebuild just for common sense. After 10 years of reading about and actually modifying honda's, I have learned to do any kind maintenance before "it" is installed.

Save a headache later on down the road.

So, they have a corner on the market for remote mounted turbochargers?

That would be great, too many precision turbos crapping out after just 1,000 miles of use due to poor oil sealing...

A lot of BMW guys run bottom mount turbos that are low enough as to necessitate scavenge pumps (NOT remote mount, just low). I'm guessing there are other applications that run into this too, but I don't know that for a fact.
