Default Few Questions Regarding Boosting A EJ Civic

First Question: If a turbo kit is installed into a ej chassis to fit a D series motor. What major changes need to be made to the turbo kit if a B series motor is installed down the road in replacement of the D series motor when it gives out. (Would be installing a GSR motor most likely down the road) but want to have some fun with the D series first.

Second Question: What type of power would a stock y8 make with a GT2860R turbo and how quick of a 1/4 mile time will the car be capable of? (3" D/P and 3" exhaust.) What sort of power band would the GT2860R make with the stock motor?

Third Question: What limitations would running the oem y8 honda radiator have on the power output of the car if any?

Would need new manifold for sure if swapped to B later on

I'm not sure on power, if you're on stock bottom end Dseries it looks like 200-220hp is about where you wanna be at for limits

how much torque can the stock motor handle?
what do most stock d series turbo make in terms of torque?

225hp is the limit for stock rods and they make virtually no torque

a gt2860r is flow limited to about 300hp, the b series motor would require a new manifold and downpipe, since the exhaust flange is different and the block heights

the OEM radiator and fan will result in coolant temps over 220F during hard pulls

thank you for the informative reply.

my other option is to just swap in a gsr or a b18 type r motor. both are good choices.. how much torque do these motors produce with basic bolt ons and a tune?

If
Your looking for higher torque get a b20.

Our little 1.8 have never been torque monsters.
Kinda hard to estimate numbers with out knowing all your supporting mods.

Get the stock numbers off Wikipedia. Those are numbers at the flywheel. Add a small handful (maybe 10), and with bolt-ons and a simple tune that's a good rough guess at what you would put to the wheels.

torque on the most basic level is a function of stroke and displacement... Honda motors don't have enough of either (except for maybe the j series v6 motors) to make any large amounts of torque. that's why you see 700hp drag cars only making 400lbft of torque.

but Honda didn't design their engines to be torque monsters, most were designed for high rpm NA horsepower, like the "r" motors.

the tighter gearing of the vtec transmissions combined with the relatively light weight of the chassis makes the "lack" of torque kind of a non issue

relative to hp the d series does make a fair amount of tq, quite more than a b16 at the same hp level. d series will take more boost pressure to get there though.

so what exactly do you want to do with this car? daily drive? track beast? what is the obd2 inspection situation where you are?

If you want torque and to stay n/a you could possibly look at a h22 swap. You can get them for pretty cheap and with bolt ons and a tune it will make the most torque n/a out of any Honda engine, except for a k24

k24s are fun... our element actually feels fast some days lol

you need to decide on a budget for this little project, as swaps and turbo parts gets expensive very quick. also you need to decide on a reasonable power goal and base your arts selection around that goal

I'm just gonna say this is a street car, so no oversized turbos or long runner turbo manifolds

and for the love of your wallet, no eBay/chinese parts either. at all

just looking to add some "somewhat" reliable power to my daily driver.

I know most stock D series can make 170 to 180 torque on stock motor, which is more than enough for some fun on the street.

Not sure if I should swap in a B series motor and then wait to boost that or just boost the D series and call it a day with 220whp and 180 torque.

If i wanted to run high 13 1/4 mile, could any B series do that with a few bolt ons and tuning? With very Good Street tires.

yea any one could, but they would need varying degrees of work. i guess it depends on if you consider cams bolt on and the weight of ur civic.

i would probably swap a b in your car. i think your 1/4 mile goals are just a bit too high for a stock motor d series on boost.

you could swap an ls and throw low boost at it (stock map sensor type psi) and meet your goal.

you could make an all motor lsvtec or b20 to do that but it will likely involve opening the motor up, if for nothing else but putting arp rod bolts in.

unless you get a smoking deal, i dont think that gsr/type r swaps are worth the money you can make an ls or b20 vtec out perform it for much less money

so what your saying is a low boost ls non vtec set up will put me in the mid to high 13 second range?

Stock ls turbo with a gsr trans got me into 13.8 I'm not a good driver also . So I think with slicks car was capable of 12s. I was making about 230 to the wheels according to the dyno jet. Trap was about 109. Not to sure on that trap though it's been a while

are the gsr transmission ratio's similar to the d16y8 si transmission ratios. Sorry dont know the transmission codes off the top of my head.

Will a LS transmission produce much slower 1/4 times than a GSR transmission? I was thinking about using an LS transmission because of the longer gears and thinking I would get a bit better gas mileage cruising on highway.

the ls trans is geared very long, good for fuel economy and street cars but bad for drag racing.

most go with gsr or b16 transmissions or they'll use gears from all 3 and build a gearset with the ratios they want

tire size and final drive ratio have the biggest effect on the overall gearing. tall tires equals longer gearing but some put in a higher fd to compensate.

for example my 97 ex, d16y8, stock trans, has 15x8 0 offset wheels with 195/45s. stock speedo reads 10mph off. so when it says 45 I'm doing 35

real confusing at first.... why is everyone passing me lol

more or less..yup.

the ls tranny is geared pretty similar to the sohc vtec, and its long compared to the others.
b16 gearing is fantastic for everything but highway driving.
wantboost is right though, if possible mix match the gears.
i think they all have the same 1st and 2nd, b16 3rd is the shortest and it would be a nice combo with a gsr 4th and either gsr or ls 5th.

at the track it comes down to your trap speed and tire size to determine your most optimal gearing. remember you want to go through as high as you can in 4th gear. once you find that, id try and use the 5th gear thats next longest

yea most people use the ls 5th gear so they can still drive on the highway and not have the motor spin 4k at highway speeds

I remember when I had my em1 that highway driving sucked with that short 5th.

that ls 5th is nice on the highway, especially in a trans with the 4.4 final its not as bad as it is in a straight up ls tranny.

i just put an ls 5th in my turbo civic's gsr tranny. its great. mpg is up a tiny bit, rpms are down a few hundred and consequently my egt and other temps are down a bit too.

straight gsr trans is usually the best overall option

I sold my b16 trans to a friend, I need to find another one that isn't stupid expensive, the ls I have is just too tall for technical road courses... I don't think I'd ever get out of 2nd at AMP lol

I have my b16 ring rear but don't have the matching pinion :/
