Default f22b1 turbo ring gap??????

hi there! im building up a f22b1 turbo. i bored out the stock block 85mm to 87mm. Running aftermarket h22a 87mm JE 9:0:1 pistons with pauter rods. Got my JE rings in and was wondering what size ring gap would be best, also can anyone show me the ring gap orientation? i know they need to be at a specific location on the piston to install. Trying to reach at least 300hp on maybe 10-15 psi. Anyone with suggestions would be very appreciated? Thanks.

If you don't know the order of the rings then have someone who does install them for you... And for the ring gaps, JE and Honda should both have recommendations for you...

I'll have to go back through, but I think my current Ls/Vtec turbo ring gaps were set to 0.0015-0.0019... But I could be wrong I'll look into it, but what ever they were they worked out fine!

I just looked in my Hanes manual and the acceptable range is 0.0008-0.0020... Now I would stick to the middle of that range if you can, but again see if your piston manufacture has any recommedations?

You can make 300whp without building the motor on the F22... I ran 335whp on a completely bone stock motor for a good while in fact. Others have also run into the 300whp range on a stock motor. Good tuning and quality managment/ parts otherwise are the key.

Also 87mm bore on a stock sleeve is going to make the sleeves quite a bit thinner. Why not consider only boring to like 86mm and running a 86mm forged piston?

thanks a bunch fellas...yeah this motor was turbo before...it was 86mm and the number one pistons cracked on me, so i decided to go with 87mm...use stock bore h22 87 mm piston...as for the diagram in the jepistons site...which side is the left and right side of the engine???is the right side the driver side and left side the passenger side???as for the engine front, im guessing its the front where the header is bolted on????????

To answer your question with my experience rebuilding motors, the front of a four cylinder is pointing to the end of the motor with the cam gears (someone correct me if Im wrong please) but USUALLY when reffering to a car the left is always the drivers side (state side lol). If I were you I would print that sheet off and take it to whoever you had machine the block and simply ask them just to make sure, they are usually helpfull which they should be seein how you are dropping upwards of 500$ for machining. You should have an oil ring and two oil ring rails and 2 compression rings, one ring rail will go on top of the oil ring and one on the bottom, there should/maybe be a mark on one side of each of the compression rings and they usually face up and or a slanted part of the ring that you can see at the ring gap unless otherwise noted in your instructions. I usually place my gaps 90 degrees from each other to make sure they dont line up wich will result in blowby. Someone plz chime in if they disagree with any of this. Hope that helps clear some things up for you.

but isn't that for a stock application? The same wouldn't apply to a turbo build would it?

Use whatever the Piston Mfg. ask's for, in this case it would be JE Pistons. Off the top of my head, you will be looking at .005-.0055 per inch of bore for a "Street Boosted Application".

Edit:

Read page # 2 of the PDF page that is posted from JE

Here is a ring installation guide I got from Endyn years ago. I have followed it for quite some time now and it has always worked:

when your referring to the #1 compression? is that the 1st ring? and the #2 is the 2nd ring? and so on?

Hey if you havent seen any of these videos check them out and a few others on youtube, they really helped me when I did my first rebuild. Also do you have a good repair manual for your car? If not I can attest it will be the best 20$ you ever spent, because it will have all the numbers you need for limits and whatnot.
