Engine temps. What is normal?
So i just finished wiring up my water temp gauge. I have a boosted D16y8 @ 17psi making 300whp. Its the first time I've had an actual temp gauge (other then the shitty stock cluster ones) so I'm not to sure what is "normal".
So ya 4 questions:
1. At what temp is my engine "warmed up"?
2. What temp is a normal opperating temp?
3. What temp is normal for when I'm hard on it for awhile? (i do some lapping)
4. At what temp should I start to be getting worried?
Thanks in advance for the info

the thermostat starts to open at about 174* then the stock fans kick on at about 195-200*
180-205* is a safe operating temp. I personally start to worry at anything over 215-220* for a prolonged period of time.
if your going to start doing some lapping I would recommend spending some time on heat wrapping parts/venting/and possibly an oil cooler. More than likely a couple hard laps on the track without those and you will certainly see high temps. I havent been on a track since ive been turbo, but just from street driving I would only expect it.

I would recommend getting an EGT (exhaust gas temperature) probe and guage as well. I don't use a water temp guage, but I do use an oil temp and oil pressure with the EGT. Oil temps on my turbo b16 are usually between 170-190 normal highway speeds with out an oil cooler. If your temps get over 220, it'd be something to worry about.
Do you have a larger radiator and a higher CFM fan? If you do decide to get an EGT, you'll want it on the 3rd runner, the closer to the head, the better. EGT temps will be about 1400-1600 under heavy load, and 1200-1400 at highway speeds, and ~800-900 at idle.

With the above setup, i never overheat in the streets and I have yet to see my stock temp needle move in my cluster when im lapping. So well see what kind of readings my water temp gauge gives me. I just wanted to be sure before i took the car out seeing as i disabled my stock cluster temp gauge
And i also have a boost gauge, oil temp, oil pressure, and a wideband that ive been running with for 2 years now.
My turbo setup just finished last fall, and will start more autoX and road courses this year. Seems you have a good idea of what you're doing, so do post up information as you start lapping some more. Good luck and have fun!

What oil do you run? Im running ls-v turbo setup and my oil temp stays between 210-225, wether im beating on it or cruising down the highway.

really? wow! I'm running 5w-30 Mobile 1 (standard). Where is your oil temp probe? Mine is on the back of the oil pan, opposite of the oil return feed. I've only had it up to 200-215 on the freeway during a four-hour drive.
With the aluminum rad in my crx (ls-t with coolant lines going thru the turbo) on a warm day in traffic with slim fan going, it never really got over 185 degrees ish.
The T should be where your oil pressure sensor is. The oil pan is where the bulk of your oil is, so that's where you would want the temp probe to be. Place it as low as possible into the pan.
^I'm talking about water temps.....I think they started talking about oil temps....
But anyways I went out for a drive just before and i'm around the 195 - 200 range on the highway...getting off the highway i saw them rise to 218 before my fan went on...
then they continued climbing to about 220 before it started dropping again. This happened when i was at a light straight after coming off the highway and having hit some boost.
So now i know that my fan is coming on WAY to late lol. Im gonna change the thermostat and fan switch to see if this helps.
Ill keep you guys posted and take some pics

sorry to jack the thread, we got carried away on the oil temps.
Water temps shouldn't be much higher either, and yes, the T should be at the head. get a lower temp fan switch and you should be good.

thats the plan. But the car went in for a cage today so i wont have more info for about a week
