Engine question about oil burning.
I have a 1.8tvw, the motor has about 4k miles on it.
We were experiencing oil smoke under vacuum at both idle and decel.
If i was to blip the throttle after idling for a few seconds it would puff blue smoke out.
If i was to throw it into 3rd gear around 80mph (~6krpm) and decel it would blow blue smoke once i touched the throttle again.
Talking to a vw cyl head specialist he said its definately valve stem seals or worn valve guides. When i last had the intake mani off doing some stuff i noticed build up all 2 of the 3 intake valves in each chamber (the middle is cleaned by the injector)
I pulled the head this morning to send it up to him for a cnc ported head with cams, ferrea valves, ti retainers etc. When i got the head off i noticed vertical scoring on the cyl walls.
Its visible but not even a percentage as bad as when you wiggle a ring out on install and drag it down. Its only on the front/back of the cyl walls (where the rod rotates on its axis and gives different angles of load)
You can feel the scored with your nails, very very fine, they are all about the same (all 4 cyls alike)
Before i did this i pulled the downpipe and idled the car and 2 stepped it watching the turbine wheel, no wet marks or any burnt oil residue from the turbo. Did a compresison test on the motor
cold closed throttle
160-160-163-160
cold open throttle
180 across the board.
warm closed throttle
170-175-170-170
warm open throttle
between 185-190 across the board
The setup is wiseco pistons 82mm @ 9.25:1 compression
wiseco rings
pauter rods.

You should of done a leakdown first.
Vertical scoring that cathces your nail is not good, it allows oil to get past the rings and burn.

what would a leakdown test have shown me? you can feel it with your nail but it doesnt catch your nail.

Re: Engine question about oil burning. (DRAGLS)
i figures since i had good even compression it was def not a ring prob. I know i dont have a valve seat prob, the car is making good power. 2 weeks ago i did 500whp on c-16 and 30psi, i dont know how i would have been able to see a ring problem as far as oil consumption short of pulling the head and looking.
Should i pull the short block out, bring it to a machine shop and have them rehone it and re ring it? I just dont know whats considered normal and what is not. Out side of around town driving i would see no blue smoke wot.
