Engine dies at idle but stays on when pressing on gas
So I get my car (B16 in 92 hatch) with a newly installed rev hard stage 2 turbo. Take if for a few spins and it was okay. Fourth spin, my engine stalls and there is smoke from under my hood. After we let it cool down, we can start the engine, but have to hold on the gas for it to stay on. Once the gas is released, it stalls. A technician told me that he thinks that I melted the rings and the engine can not hold the compression. Any ideas as to what has happened, what I should do and how much it would cost? Thanks.

4th gear, engine stalls. Pushing down the gas while crankign to start up the motor...
Sounds like either Cracked ring lands, broken rings, or cracked sleeves.

could have dropped a valve... same thing happen to my friends 6month old JG built motor......

I was wrong. There was blow by and the compression is
cyl #1 180 psi
cyl #2 50 psi
cyl #3 70 psi
cyl #4 901 psi
cyl #1 180 psi

Take off the head and tell us what it looks like. I'm sure its cracked/broken ring lands.
Replace it with forged pistons/rods and back to normal again

Whoa, typo, I meant 90 psi!!! What are ring lands, are they the same as piston rings? Thanks.

yup ring landing is probably broken. The bore has at least one groove in it. Sorry to hear that.
The ring landings are part of the piston. Its the area where the piston ring rests on.
also do a leakdown. This will tell you for sure if you gotta pull the motor. If you hear the air coming out of the valve cover breather its a piston problem.

So whats the worst case scenerio and what would i have to do? How can I prevent this from happening in the future? I am running 9 psi but for some odd reason, can't adjust the wastegate and it should only run 7 psi.

forged pistons would be good...rods are nice...sleeving would be good too. get it properly tuned.

How much in labour, or hours does it take to remove and replace pistons, rods and rings?
If I was to redo my bottom end, is there anything else I should do other than low compression pistons, rods and rings? I heard something about main bearings??? Or should this be fine?

Correct me if I'm wrong but he is looking at a cool grand just in parts.

... free bump cuz i wanna know what to do too... so i guess the concensus is to do both a leakdown test and a compression test to get an idea of the problem (how will we know if there is a problem?)... then pull the head and take a look (what would i be looking for?)... but most likely it is either piston ringlands, rings, or sleeves... right?... lemme know... thanks...
