I am putting a turbo on my 97 civic and I wanted to know if a EGT gauge is good to have or is it just a waist of money?

some would argue its the NUMBER 1 most important

Yes, #1 important, unless you have a wideband with display.

yea, i should have been more clear. if i had 3 gauges it would be in there. But you are correct, if i had 1 gauge, it would be the EGT.

actually, EGTs can tell you too many different things...better to have a knock meter (safc II), and an a/f wideband. EGTs change with timing (ie retarded timing results in high egts)...and to tune with egts just isn't practical. do NOT tune a/f going by egts.

like originally stated.
ASSUMING YOU CANT GET A WIDEBAND.

nah, u see, it's still pointless though...egt tuning...u can't tune a/f period with it because timing has too much effect on egts...

As a DSM owner also, ... I see this alot. heres my problem with EGT's:
its like trying to use the rear view mirror to drive straight ahead. also they're really inconsistant from car to car and installation to installation. they're a good tool for warning about big temp sweeps, but a good knock detection system is best.. IMO.
Just my opinion.

How is an EGT more important than the boost gauge itself. If you can afford all the turbo stuff you can afford a boost and EGT gauge. I feel on a boosted application a boostgauge would be #1.

ok....
he asked is the EGT a good gauge. the answer to that question is YES.
he didnt ask is the EGT a good gauge to tune my car. for all you know he could have his car tuned by a professional hondata tuner.
The point is the EGT is the best GAUGE, not tuning system which he didnt even ask about....
which leads me to, YES, the EGT is a better gauge than the boost gauge. This has been covered several times, so if you dont believe me then look it up.
