my car felt better and went a little bit faster with the gsr tranny. use the ls to get you by, but try and get another gsr trans

i had a high horsepower car with a b16. the b16 tranny gears are very short. so the more power you make, the more useless that tranny becomes. the gsr tranny is just about perfect for most any range of power. the ls is what you want if you drive the car on the interstate alot or if you want better gas mileage. other than that, dont use an ls in my opinion. you could always go gsr w/ an ls 5th too...

Yeah, thats the way Im trying to go.
Right now, with a boosted LS motor, it really doesnt matter, with the torque and 7k redline, my LS trans does fine. But Im going LSVTEC this fall, and Im thinking the LS trans will take that motor out of its powerband with the taller gearing. And Im at the track quite often.
To the OP, how much whp are you making?

If your comparing a high hp car with a b16 vs LS....and saying a b16 is useless, that means that you obviously dont have slicks. Because if you have the proper set of slicks and proper redline..... the b16 is very useful.

i do have slicks and i was turning the motor to 9500 rpms at that time. the reason i say it becomes useless with more power doesnt really have to do with 1st and 2nd gear only. yes, 1st and 2nd become very short, but more importantly, shifting into 5th to finish the 1/4 mile run hurts time slips.
i can run 4th gear out in the 1/4 mile with a gsr tranny without going to 5th.
i am talking about 600+ whp. for setups around 400-500whp, the b16 tranny is a good setup

I ran an LS Tranny for years in my GSR, it helps out alot for traction and is very civil for daily duties, but the long gears just suck for acceleration once you get into 3rd gear. I have since switched to a B16 Tranny is the difference is amazing, I can lug a gear and take off so much quicker and I can brake boost 4th gear to 15+psi at only 60mph, with the LS tranny I was shifting out of 3rd at 120ish mph now its 100mph and it just rips right through 4th, so much better from an acceleration standpoint.
You can live/get by with the LS, it just sucks for drag racing.

I think that if you get a GSR tranny and take 3rd gear from a B16 and 5th gear from a LS you will be all good and remember you have to put LSD. I did it and thats the best tranny I ever put together.
