Default Edelbrock turbo kit for SOHC's

so far, mixed review/opinions

Upside - fit and finish is pretty good, not quite as nice as GReddy but still good. Kit is very complete.

Downside - fuel "solution" is a ******* joke. This thing has done nothing but detonate, and the kit shipped without any sort of provision for the map sensor. On top of that, since this car was an automatic, it didnt fit as well as it would have, and a few small knick knacks had to be adjusted or added to. Worse yet, Edelbrock has no idea how to solve the detonation issue - and I doubt my customer wants to shell out cashola for Hondata after spending 3500 on the kit.

Final thoughts - like every other kit, it would be great if it came supplied with Hondata...

Well, I wish you the best of luck with getting this thing running right. Sell him a Hondata. He'll either figure it out or he'll be in for a rebuild before long. And no i still don't want a Hondata "yet".

****, the fuel problem is a bummer to hear. From what Edelbrock and Marauder have been saying, I was under the impression that their fuel setup would be kick-***. It was supposed to have been pre-dyno tuned for the P2P and all that good crap. Maybe they just forgot to ship out some stuff to you?

yeah, we had one over at Elite Autosport on a 2F2F look alike Green civic and the thing just bogged all day long!! those injectors on the back side of the IM is a joke!! they look like they flow 10cc!! i'd rather just get the greddy kit.

Default apexi kit?

Any opinions on the Apexi turbo kit? I would like the Edelbrock one since its pretty complete, but the Apexi one is just missing a few parts which should equal to the edelbrock price..maybe..

great info guy, I thought those kit were some kind of " No brainer " like just put it on there and forget about them,

will bigger injector on the back of the manifold will solve the problem??
or a msd BTM maybe ?? is there something included in the kit to retard the timing?

If it were me... I would wait until the "open track" kit comes out and then just tune it with a hondata or standalone.

Damn....You don't like the fit of the Edelbrock kit. You are the FIRST I have talked to who thought that. I know a handful of people with it already too.

What was modified on the car before the turbo kit? A friend of mine had all kinds of crap done to his car and then put the turbo kit on. He complained about running lean and detonating like a ****. Turned out it was because he had a adjustable FPR and had it set at 34 psi, way too low. It should have been in the low 40's, what the stock pressure should be.

You know, if you buy the Serial Link (for like $70) and cut a hole in the piggyback, its fully tunable. And you can wire up a electronic boost control solenoid and program a boost map.

As for a map sensor problem, I don't have one with my car. But I think some of the other ECU's have lower set points for throwing a CEL. Wouldn't a missing link fix that?

LOL....those injectors are capable of adding 160 hp at stock fuel pressure.

You don't need it, the piggyback pulls back timing with boost. If you are needing more timing pulled out, somethings wrong with your car. But, like I mentioned before, for $70 you can get the cable to connect the piggyback to a laptop and tune it yourself. For $250 you can get a handheld controller as well, if you don't have a laptop.

Test subject was an automatic 98. From speaking with Edelbrock tech, which has been pretty helpful, the kit was not designed with this specific model in mind. The trans mount is slightly altered on the autos, as well as the IACV and a few other small things that made it not as straight forward as designed. Edelbrock should have considered these things before releasing the kit.

The car is as stock as it can get, didn't even have an intake on it when it was brought to us, stock exhaust too

They suggested that to us too, I think it's horseshit that I'll have to get my customer to plunk down more money for a mistake that Edelbrock made. Hell, the first Link box blew up! They had to over night us a second one.

At the least, you were sent somethign to prevent MAP codes - nothing was sent with this kit. I'd really like to know how the hell this thing passed CARB....

Wow, they overnighted another piggyback to you! Greddy probably would have said to pound sand, since its not meant for an automatic! Even though they didn't advertise that either! I know, I tried to put their first GSR kit on a 95 GSR, and when things didn't work out they told me it does fit (even though all the paperwork on the kit said 94+). He said it wont fit 94-95 and was rude and basicly told me I'm on my own!

IMO...who wants a turbo on a auto anyway! LOL

well hey, I'm with you, but IMHO who wants a SOHC? Personal preference - this kids playing with what he's got, so be it.

Im just trying to get my customer what he paid for - a correctly running turbocharged car.

I talked with my connection at Edelbrock. The first turbo kits were not supplied with anything for the MAP sensor, since they were unawear of the problem on 96-98 cars. Like my 2000, the 99-00 don't throw a CEL with 7 psi of boost. All of the kits now shipping out of Edelbrock have a MAP sensor fix in it.

I have put over 17,000 miles on my car with the Edelbrock turbo setup and have only changed the oil and filter. My MSD ignition fried a set of plugs, so put the ignition back to stock with some new plugs.

On the 98 auto civic....you think maybe the fuel pump isn't flowing at much as a normal civic? maybe it can't keep up with the demands of the turbo system. Technically, it should be, but if it has worn out past what the turbo system needs, it may need a fresh one. Just a thought.

civic fuel pumps are retarded, some people can get away with using them, but others cant.

i would say get a GSR or type R fuel pump those are 190glph i beleive..

also im not familiar with the kit, but even though it pulls timing on the piggiy back thing, what is the distributor timming at? i would also say retard that a few degrees try it see if that helps

Edelbrock has their own in house CARB testing facility, they do the tests, and ship the numbers off to CARB for approval.

man, if that isnt a damn way around the system i dont know what is. Who's to say it actually IS in fact smog legal, even if it has carb cert. Thats horseshit....

Damn....what crawled up your *** and died! The emissions testing lab is calibrated and check by CARB, and they can come in at any time with a calibration vehicle and check their equipment whenever they want. At my previous job, one of the engineers I worked with used to work for CARB. They go thru everything with a fine tooth comb. Their reject your setup if it doesn't run the right kind of hose!

You call stuff horseshit just cause you are frustrated. Edelbrock is the sponsor of my car, that was shown at the SEMA IAS show. And they do read thru Honda-Tech.

Frustrated? Yes, you could say that. I've been doing turbo hondas, nissans, mitsu's, for years and I haven't run into these kinds of problems with bolt on kits. I've had this car for nearly a week to install a system that was a "bolt on" kit. It was supposed to be complete, yet it was missing many parts. Im frustrated b/c I'm not being paid to do R&D on this car on a kit that was supposed to be a finished product. I'm at my wits end right now with this car...

I will say that Rich Bell has been very helpful throughout the entire process of sorting the bugs with this car, and yes, I'm aware he reads honda-tech. In fact I think it's great that he does, I wish more manufacturer's reps would read tech forums!

We've now got 9 check valves on the map sensor and finally it wont throw a CEL for map sensor. These were items that we had to acquire and install on a kit that was missing any sort of map sensor trickery device. I've been assured, however, that future kits will be sent with them. We've now run into a new problem of boost creep. Now when the tach crosses 6k boost starts rising to around 8psi - and I'm pretty sure thats what's causing the issue of detonation. We have the vaccum lines run exactly as prescribed, and they have no holes in them. We're going to try adjusting the actuater swing arm in hopes that it will curb this issue.

And, when its all said and done, this thing is STILL going to be s l o w, but thats probably the a/t fault more than the turbo kit. As for the CARB issue, you'll definately know more about that than we will, we don't have CARB here. Just the way it was described sounded a little too easy to ditch the system. But then again, if they had given me the kit and sponsored my car, I'd be pretty quick to defend them too...
