Was there a filter on the turbo? I could see something not very big getting in there and causing problems or dust and debris from driving it getting on the wheel and causing it to go out of balance over a period of time. I have seen this before on other cars. Also was your oil return line correctly installed meaning was it gravity fed or did it have kinks in it? All these things are very important for any turbo to survive.

I like the word "bajillion". Too bad you were using it to describe your turbo. Ebay FTL!

I would say find a used precision or garret gt30 or 60-1 maybe. You can pick them up for around $500-$800 used or new.

I'd have suggested an LS instead. More power before 6500, faster spool, and you already have the better tranny. I think Tony1 did a comparo with ls & b16 on the same turbo kit, and the ls was faster on the track. Unsure if the trannies differed, but you already have the shorter ratio.

I'd suggest a 60-1 only if you want to stay under 12psi - and spool sometime tomorrow. A 50trim t3/t04e would get you those b16 numbers with a MAP sensor upgrade, and be much more responsive. The 50trim can found for low-$600's, possibly less if you talk to a H-T vendor.

Yeah, and you've read posts saying the same thing, yet you bolted the one you had right on. You read the horror stories, as will all the others that end up using them. The issue is, people would rather chance it all with chinese junk to save money. Just that small chance it'll last semi long and perform semi well is enough for most young compulsive guys to slap it on, and then cover up the risk with attitude "so what if it blows, I don't care". You read the risks, you did it...others will read this thread and still bolt it on or buy one just the same. You haven't saved anyone, you just added to the pile of what everyone already knows....and so continues the trend of people buying garbage.

Yeah, those couple of bolts holding that thing on...man, too much hassle to replace that. Just might as well run it I guess.

hey I know all you guys hate everything ebay, and i will be the first to say i used to have all that junk on my car.

BUT I WILL say the ebay turbo WAS NOT junk. I have been running the SAME .57 trim ebay turbo for 3 1/2 years and it has seen 20 psi. I just rebuild it once a year with a 40 dollar kit just to be safe.

I am a maintanence freak though, I'm not a get in and go person and plus i give the turbo time too cool down

I'm a diesel mechanic and the main leading cause that I find with turbos breaking shafts or blowing seals and bearings is poor maintanence and people abusing it.

I've seen all different kinds of turbos go bad, Garretts, Borg Warners, triple K's, IHI's, Holsets just to mention a few. and look they are all brand name turbos, and it's because of idiots who don't care.

criticize me all you want, but I see this on a daily basis in my profession and I've seen quality stuff go bad just as much as junk stuff. And now days, you should ask yourself if that 1000 dollar GT turbo is even all made with american parts.

And hey we should be glad that a blown turbo will not make a gasoline engine run off, I've seen it a few times in diesels and it's f***ing scary

Thats great- My garrett turbo at its compressor wheel after eight miles. Brand new. Replaced it with an ebay (china) turbo, and it so far has been fine for 10k-15k miles. What does this prove? jack ****. Stuff breaks, sometimes for specific reasons, sometimes not. But when it really comes down to it, the people that are running these turbo's have had them running with NO problems, but someone always talks about "their friend of a friend" or "my tuner said"....Run these with an oil restrictor, make sure the bolts are tight, they will be fine.

I don't understand why you would need to rebuild a turbo once a year?????

I had my Precision turbo for over 5 years and I have not need any rebuilds cause I maintan it by using quality oil, however that does not mean I don't rape it like a $2 ***** which is why I built it for.

Also when you rebuild the turbo you are supposed to balance the turbo shafts and if you don't then chances are you will have failure which might cause you to rebuild it every year.

Do you drive this turbo car of yours alot?? cause it does not sound like you do.

Main causes of bearing failure is oil or the lack of. People use too thick of oil most of the time and a turbo should see no thicker then 10w40. Anything thicker will cause problems or oil starvation causing the bearings to fail prematurely.

Then on some cars that are not tuned properly(running rich) which the fuel and oil mixes into the oil causing oil break-down. When that happens oil is no longer oil and this will might cause engine failure as well.

Air filters are another cause of turbo failure and everyone seen those already, wire mess does not count people.

Oh an no you do not need to let the turbo cool down everytime you step out of the car. If you push the car and keep the boost pressure on for a good min(racing) then yeah I would see why you would need to but if you drive it normal like I do you do not need it.

I had a turbo timer on my car and I took that crap out cause it's pointless, only reason why it was there was because the car originally came with it from previous owner.

Here is a good way to keep a turbo going strong and for long.

1. Use good oil no thicker then 10w40. (Synthetic IMO)
2. Get an Oil cooler which will help alot especially for turbo cars.
3. Get a good tune and keep an eye on oil level and oil temps.

OOh yeah the final message is "**** happens" so just because it's eBay it does not mean it's garbage but don't expect anything to last forever but if you maintain it then you will have a better chance.

its not ebay per say, its the knock off junk peddlers hocking cheap parts and using price to lure in the suckers. ebay harbors the counterfeiters and copy companies because they make a ton of money off of them. there are good products on ebay but the non brand name stuff is generally not worth the shipping it cost to get to you. they interviewed the ceo of zippo lighters a while back and he was saying they lost 30% of their business to counterfeiting much of it was ebay related. ebay just turns a blind eye to it because it has become such significant portion of their income. its too bad LV lost the appeal in french court for 56m or something like that. if they would have won ebay would be in some serious deep poo poo, because tons of companies would be filing similar claims. in many ways ebay is creating socialism. there is an 11-14% sale commission per item sold between paypal and ebay. dont get me wrong there are plenty of good things about ebay also, but they just need to clean up the copies and counterfeit mess they created.

i want to know HOW IN THE HELL can an n/a motor suck a "bajillion" pieces of turbo through an intercooler and down into the intake manifold, past the valves, past the rings, and into the oil pan?!?!?!??!?!??!?!!?!?!? makes no sense what so ever.

sounds to ME like the motor took a ****, pieces of the pistons took out the turbo, and the rest is history.

unless your compressor wheel magically vaporized, teleported to the oil pan, then re-organized itself in a "bajillion" pieces.

i call BS.

If hes using a poopy ebay intercooler I could see small bits of metal getting through the large gaps between fins, but even then, I dont see it destroying the engine. W/e.

I'll pay the money just to support american business.

Any turbo will last with the correct Maintenence. You can see an Ebay turbo at for 5 years with a good owner and a Garrett last for 5 days with s crappy owner. It's all about how you maintain it.

The simple fact is that people are more willing to beat the crap out of their $150 Ebay turbo than they are their $800 Garrett turb. The high premiums for Garretts drive away the would-be beaters to the $150 ebay turbo. then the people who aren't willing to pay for quality up front and quality while they are using it complain because their turbo ate the compressor wheel or what not.

but some kid who just graduated high school and got a garrett turbo as a present maybe can't or doesn't feel like putting quality synthetic oil in can break it just as if it was an ebay turbo. then they bitch that they wasted 800 bucks on a good turbo.

however, some guy may not be able to afford th big upfront cost, but is willing to pay for good synthetic oil may have a turbo that lasts forever.

moral of the story is take care of your stuff, no matter what the upfront cost, and it will take care of you.
