Default Dyno Preperation

Ok, this has happened alot lately, to me and other tuners I talk to. It seems alot of people are neglecting the basics when it comes time to get their cars tuned. Please, for your own sake, make sure your car is ready for tuning. Dyno time is not cheap, and it's not the place to be doing general maintainance on your car. A few dollars spent in preperation will save you big money in the long run. You need to make sure your cap and rotor are in good condition, if not brand new. They're very cheap pieces compared to what your motor costs and what dyno time costs. Spark plugs, make sure they're new or that you have a new set with you. Spark plug wires, if they're not fairly new, replace them or at least have a new set with you in case you need them, you can always return them if you don't need them and are a real cheap ***. lol. DON'T run Ractive wires, they have too much RF noise and they **** up everything electrical within sight! Fuel filter, if there's more than 40k on it, replace it. Belts, make sure they're in good condition, if one breaks on the dyno, it's pain in the *** to change. For the most part, that's it. These little things will help you dyno session be short and sweet, saving you money in the long run. Nothing is better than a smooth problem free dyno session.

Seriously... I hear the same things from everyone I talk to...Prepare your setup BEFORE you come in for *tuning*... Tuning does not mean maintenance...

I agree with that. When driving around on a basemap, the car tends to be rather rich, especially if running with out O2, for those to lazy to put one in. Plugs will need replaced, that is the biggest problem I run into.

Good writeup. I was tuning a guy's car the other week and he had tons of problems! His tranny was making terrible sounds and felt like it was going to die, his car kept overheating, and when i went to check his plugs his cheap plug wires came apart while pulling them out and got stuck on top of the plug so i couldn't pull it out

Here's one...If you have MSD Ignition, make sure the coil is BRAND NEW and is all properly wired up. Ask me why I suggest this...

Why do you suggest this?? LOL!!

Yeah he is right, I had all kinds of problems with my coil and dig6 and waisted 2 hours on the dyno not being able to rev past 5k.... Definitely something I should have taken care of before the car was dynoed but I was in a HUGE rush... Live and learn I guess!

Make sure your car is running properly before the dyno time, fix all your boost leaks, exhaust leaks exc.. $100 per hour to chase down little **** and do a maintenance tune up on your car isn't cheap in my book.

Does that mean I can't run my OBX chrome bling wires anymore?

Also make sure your spark plugs are already gapped. It's better to be on the smaller side then having to regap them when they are hot as hell.

It may sound ultra simple, but make sure you have enough fuel. And if by the third pull things are not operating properly, get it off the dyno and go back another day. Troubleshooting for $100-$200 per hour is not something you want to pay.

if they make you a proper basemap then i don't see any reason why you could cruise 60-70 miles over there. You may not want to get on it too hard, and your gas mileage might kinda suck, but it should be able to get you there just fine.

no I wouldnt drive to hard. just get me there so I can play on the way back and I would be happy. its just such a pain getting my car on my trailer. and I wouldnt wanna risk blowing my car up..

Before my tuning session, I did a valve adjustment, replaced my distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs, plug wires, oil, oil filter, and underwear .
