I don't know about the 90% thing, but DSMs are not the most trouble free turbo car you could pick. Personaly, I love turbo hondas. A nissan with a sr20det is a pretty nice "factory" turbo car. not hard at all to put down 300+hp. Besides a turbo D or B series honda I would pick an s14 with an sr20det.
downsides...
traction (lack of)
gas
tickets
tires
brakes
always wanting more power
people asking how big your blow off valve is
slightly more mantainence
If there were any MAJOR downsides do you really think car companys would put turbos in the hands of yuppies in saabs and rednecks in daytonas? If it's done correctly a turbo car is the same as an NA car but with more Tq

just gotta set this straight, only the 7 bolt crank DSMs get crank walk. No first gens do. My dad's car has 150,000 miles on it, 92 Talon Tsi, with all the bolt ons possible without internals. It holds up great, nothing broke since we had it, except the timing belt when we first got it needed replaced. Nothing to crazy wrong if you don't beat the hell out of them.
