Default Downshifting when braking

ok i was just wondering if downshifting while coming to a complete stop is good for the engine, i have heard both that it is fine and not a good idea at all (for both NA and FI) which is it?

I would venture it's not good for the engine, but probably not bad for it either. On the otherhand, if your downshift isn't perfectly smooth then it's definately wearing on the clutch. Which would you rather replace more regularly, brakepads, or your clutch?

Just my .02,

It's fine if you do it right. If you double clutched and rev matched perfectly then techically there wouldn't be any more wear on the synchros or the clutch. I always downshift. I usually wont go all the way down to second but if im cruising in 4th gear coming to a stop sign ill put it in 3rd for a little before bringing it to neutral. So if you rev match correctly the only thing that would be wearing is the synchros but I dont really think it would be significant. The synchros are there so that you dont have to double clutch, so if you do then your obviously extending the life, but it would be a pain in the *** to double clutch constantly. HTH

I always heel toe from 5th - 4- 3 - 2 and extremely rarely to 1st. My clutch is stock and so are my syncro's and they are doing fine with 100K miles and my friend with under 90K that does not race or heel toe has bad syncro's. Just food for thought

My foots too big to heel and toe...I usually just let off the brake to revmatch. Maybe I need to pick up some racing shoes lol.
