Do name brand mbc's really perform that well?
I've been searching google and in here for an answer to this question because I was planning on just making my own MBC, but apparently people have noticed power gains from using a brand name MBC. They've been seeing better spool-up which helps throughout the rpms. Now, that being said do you guys think that "power gain" they may have seen on the dyno could have been from other reasons like humidity and temperature? I guess I'm just trying to figure out if the extra $90 is going to be worth the power gain. Money sucks

I think the majority of the people run name brand MBC's because they know that the manuf will stand behind their product if for some reason it decides to malfunction or a spring inside breaks or something to that extent.
I have heard good and bad about using ebay MBC's or homemade ones.
You won't see power gains from one MBC to another, all a MBC is is just a spring and a ball that holds pressure. The humidity and ambient temp of the outside air will defiantly will effect your hp/tq. Colder outside = colder air going into the turbo and since it's more condensed.
However is cheaping out on a MBC that may malfunction and possibly make you overboost and pop your motor really worth it? I think that the extra ~$50 - 60 bucks is cheap insurance in buying a proven MBC so I don't pop my motor.
Personally on my own car I run a Greddy TVVC which is ~150 bucks or so, but I got it with a kit I bought but I have a buddy that had an ebay one and it doesn't work at all.

Apparently people are noticing earlier spool which gave them noticeable, higher power numbers. I guess with the right bleed hole size and ball material, they are achieving the better spool. But, I wanna know how much power we're talking so that i can further debate buying one. The warranty is a good reason though. I have heard ppl having nuts come loose on diy mbc's and overboosing till the motor went pop.

If you have an EMS that has boost cut and its setup properly (honestly cant think of one that doesnt anymore) I dont see how your going to overboost and pop your motor if the MBC fails.

what do you plan on getting the car tuned with, if its hondata, ectune, neptune i would skip the mbc and do boost by gear with a mac/hondata/aem solenoid

It will be retuned on Crome again, but maybe I should check what else my tuner is familiar with...other than hondata since it's so damn expensive. I'll have to check the Blox mbc, dc2.

Re: Do name brand mbc's really perform that well?
sorry to double post so quick. I just checked out the blox mbc. sounds similar to one of the Hallman...I think the pro rx is the exact model. How does the Blox respond to small boost increases? I'm only going up by 4-5 psi over my WG spring.
p.s. so you guys agree there is an obvious power difference between a diy mbc and a brand name one?

your best bet is to switch to ectune/neptune/hondata
even if you do it for boost by gear alone it is well worth the extra money in a high horse power fwd honda

We've had a lot of cars in the past with Homemade boost controllers. As you are well-aware, they aren't that hard to make. However, the bigger names understand and design their controllers with better materials, on average, and don't have springs or nuts fail that can create catastrophic results. The manual boost controllers don't help with "spool" as much as the EBCs due to the lack of finely adjustable solenoids, but they can get the job done fine if your needs are simple. Personally, for MBCs I've only trusted the Hallman and NEWER turbo XS ball-spring setups. I am not as familiar with the blox units.
