There's no rule that would apply to everyone, it would probably require some calculations that aren't really worth it, IMO. Shorter is always better assuming that you have gotten the exhaust to leave the engine bay. You don't want to exhaust in there, as was stated above, that's where your motor is breathing from, so you want clean air in there.

No but ideal placement would be under the oil pan to where the exhaust gases are being detered from your engine bay.

Re: (envee)
If there's a bit more restriction from the length, it will just open the WG valve a tad more automaticly. Unless you have serious problems, such as a 2" dump tube merging with a 2.25" DP and running very low psi resulting in mad boost creep, you should just focus on getting it away from the engine bay. As most people with good WG setups that dump back into the DP rarely have issues, I can't see a dump tube creating issues.

hmmm, everybody says its loud by i have a friend with an lsvtec turbo eg and his dumptube is about 2ft long and its really quiet ive heard it at 7psi, ive heard it at 25psi its just no any louder than an na motor.
i guess the problem is what do you consider loud, to each his own on this one i guess...

Pretty much, every car I have driven or heard, usually the muffler is more of the problem with the noise.
