Default Diameter of charge pipes?

Need a little advice with my first junkyard turbo install. 90 civic rt4wd wagon with D16A6. DSM 14b td-05 turbo. HF mani with adaptor plate. 1g DSM blow off valve & SMIC. I plan on runnig 4-6psi w/FMU, & upgrading to AFC hack or ghettodyne shortly, & cranking it up to 8psi. I'm not going to race it, just fast driving, lots of twisties, & lots of mountain climbing. I'm not as concerned about high-end power, as I am about fast spool up.

The SMIC will be mounted in the fender well, close to the tire, with heavy screen protecting it, so that the spinning wheel blows air on it, 911 tt style, also with a duct from the bumper, the opening in the bumper being a hole 2.5"x4" with the duct growing to 6"x8" at the IC. I am psyched how well it fits in there, I will have to have one of the end tanks slightly modified. But the piping should run really clean. No bends sharper than 90 degrees. I am going to have the lower charge pipe & down pipe custom made, with mandrel bent tubing. I'm clocking the turbo so that the compressor outlet points down. The charge pipe will run down next to the dp, than across the main cross member & into the fender well. I was planning on making this pipe 2" steel. DP 2.5" steel. From IC to TB, I was planning on using a CAI, because it fits so perfect. Do you think it's 3" diameter is too big?

I have just read "maximum boost", & corky bell suggests that the charge pipes should be smaller diameter than the exhaust. The bigger the charge pipes, the more air must be compressed, the more turbo lag. Do you think the extra volume of a 3" CAI would make much of a difference? I have to mod the end tank of the IC anyway, so getting a 3" outlet wouldn't be any harder. It would seem like getting a 2" charge pipe to cleanly flare to 3" to fit on the throttle bottle would be hard. Wouldn't the change in diameter mess up the air flow?

It would seem to me, the best place to change the diameter of the charge pipes would be coming out of the IC, in that air is already turbulent coming out of the core, and the change wouldn't creat anymore drag. I just don't want a bunch of lag.

2.25" turbo to throttle / 2.25" turbo to intercooler >> 2.5" intercooler to throttle....the usual setups...

2.25 is fine for 8 psi. if you get 3 you will have turbo lag

I'd do 2" all around. Boost is a measure of pressure, nothing about it says volume or velocity(speed). Of course all 3 of them palsy a huge factor over all, but I'd like smaller charge pipes better to build better boost.

just my $.02
