Devestated oil pump inside

Here's a pic of what happens when you shift at 9000 rpm and let it run down the rpm in gear. Funny thing is, the motor only makes 307whp but I guess the shock of it all at that high of revs is not good. Luckily I shut the car down as soon as the oil light came on. Anyone know who sells prodrive oil pump gears?

Good set on left, on the right side is what happens when I get thru with it.

and here is the housing, real crappy pic tho.

I tore it down a couple days ago and cleaned everything out. There was a lil bit of metal in the oil filter but none anywhere else except for the oil pan. I guess as soon as it exploded it had no pressure to push stuff through. When I pulled the oil pump off, it sounded like a baby's rattle. After 3 oil changes in about 20 minutes, I feel confident that all the crap was cleaned out correctly, there was no metal in the new oil or the new filters.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them before? I know a couple people that have had this happen, bnut they were shifting in the 9600-9800 range.

That is awesome. I mean, it sucks, but look what you were able to do to that poor oil pump. If it were me that would go into my collection of broken stuff.

The most catastrophic thing I've ever done, besides twisting connecting rods, was breaking a camshaft in a 350 Chevy in half.

Yeah, it has a special place next to the other broken stuff I still have. I have a couple cracked pistons and a bunch of melted valves from my N2O days.

i have done this a previous engine of mine... built ls/vtec shifting about 8500 rpm.... i think my oil pump exploded, cause i was running one of them great unorthadox crank pully's.

I don't get why that would cause it???

My buiddy turobo'd his stock chevy 305 1/2 ton. 15 PSI Snapped the CRANK in half..... Would've thought a piston or rod would give out long before a crank LOL

From what I was thinking, the shock of the torque back and forth shattered it. Its just a guess tho.

what crank pulley and flywheel are you using?

there is your culprit. that pulley does not provide any dampening.

Hmmm, no harmonic dampner/balancer. think that might have had something to do with it????

exactly really has nothig to do with shifting it has every thing to do with harmonics and the more rpm the more they are amplified with nothing to dampen then thats what will happen ..

Re: Devestated oil pump inside (b18cls1)
Yeah, I was looking at that. I just got done giving away my stock one also. I talked to a friend of mine that was having the same problem and he was running the unorthodox pulley, so thats the link. Thanks guys.

Re: Devestated oil pump inside (t04ecvc)
get a fluidampener . and if you think prodrive gears are better than stock ones . click the search button . even people on the prodrive team dont use them

Re: Devestated oil pump inside (Hella_JDM)
I'm gonna have to save a lil before I can get a Fluidamper. I am gonna look for another stock one first. Thanks for the help guys, made it alot easier to figurethis out.

Thanks.

I have one question tho, has anyone had this happen to them and what crank pulley and flywheel were you using.

Re: Devestated oil pump inside (t04ecvc)
I bought a fluidamper to prevent this, but as someone else stated, at a higher rpm, the load from vibrations increases. Earl posted something about a crank that was unbalanced by a couple grams, and by the time it was at 9krpm's it was around 180lbs of force. These aren't exact numbers, but I think they are close. You get the idea.

Yeah I read something simular from Mike Kojima a while back. I just purchased a stock crank pulley on egay. Maybe he is a member here.
