Default Is this DETONATION???

after nitrous use i checked my plugs all were fine apart from 1 in cylinder 4 where the tip was melted off, (tip being the arch at the end of the plug which are ngk-r) could it be detonation?? the car drove fine without a problem even with nitrous use??
thanks

umm thats a little bit more than detonation there...

I'd say you have some extremely high cylinder temperatures, the kind that not only melt electrodes off plugs but melt once-perfect pisons.

I'd stay off the nitrous until you figure out the problem.

Yea, Lay off the juice. Did you use colder plugs, or are they the stock plugs?

what should i do get a compression check or something???, another thing is i didnt retard timing for a 65 bhp shot nitrous should i do that.

finally what spark plugs you all use for your nitrous and turbo projects
thanks for your time

its a bit different that plug is totally roasted(in the pic), in mine u see that arch that comes over the plug on the bottom it is less black but the end is melted and u see the where the tip is below that arch that is still intact on mine.
any advice am i running rich/lean is it detonation??
what doi need to do!! thanks for your replies

Sounds lean if youre melting a plug. BAD BAD news especially with nitrous. Also timing is a huge issue with nitrous. If you arent retarded enough you can melt plugs. Definately want to run different plugs. But that being said are you running direct port or fogger. If you are running direct port make sure that cylinder is jeted correctly. good luck

Damn man, thats not cool if your arch is gone. Makes me sad... I'd assume you'd have a serious problem if that happened unless the chunk of plug went out the exhast valves, but still, you'd probably notice some kind of awkwardness?

im running zex dry nitrous, i havent retarded the timing for the 65 shot maybe thats whats causing the problem, the spark plugs would b brown if i was running lean right? but the melted plug was black.
i have about half a bottle of nitrous left all i wanna do is use it and then pull the nitrous out of my car and carry on with my turbo project!!

so any advice on what i should do??retard timing do i need more fuel???

i got worried also when i saw that plug, i thought maybe i could have blown a piston but i checked the car even did a 0-100 test it came out as normal 7.4 secs, cars not causing anyprobs so hopefully shud b ok.

^^^^^^anyway see above post ^^^^^^^^

1st thing never ever use those platnum plugs with nitrous. Second they burned off because it ran way lean and burned really hot. The next step after the plugs will be a valve or a piston. If you using a POS zex system get a fuel pump. The zex kits add tons of fuel pressure to add fuel in with the nitrous. This is a very very unsafe setup. I have seen some 55 shot setups with full bottle and warmer spike fuel pressure to over 100psi and your stock pump just cannot handle that much fuel. Then you will have issues if your injectors are a bit dirty or after years of use not flowing the same as others.

Remember nitrous is basically really really cold O2 and in a cumbustion engine you need the proper mix of O2 and fuel. If not it will compress in the cylinder and explode before it is supposed to and burn really really HOT!!!. Look at your 2 spark plugs. They are in your motor to ignite the fuel and O2 in your motor and after being able to take all that heat they are burned completely off. Either get a nice big high pressure fuel pump or do not run nitrous.

I don't get it, people answered your question numerous times. Do you read the posts?

this is what i would do....

1. get a feul pump(walbro 255lph)since your running a zex hit that relies on jacked up the fuel pressure to compensate for the nitrous. after the pump is installed it may alter your base fuel pressure so a gauge and adjustable regulator might be necessary

2. go pick up a set of 2 step colder plugs. ive always used NGK bkr7e-11 and theyve never given me a prob. id also gap them to around .035 if i were you

3. retard your timing about 3 or 4 degrees just to be safe.

all this will make your car slower off the juice but will make it alot safer on it

PS the plug that melted was black because it was unable to ignite the a/f mixture properly after u melted it causing it to get carbon build up for the few seconds/minutes that u let it run after it melted

Sounds like you should not be messing around with nitrous. Anyone have any bets on how long til it pops?
