okay, i did the search and came up with like 131 results...i know detonation sounds like "marbles hitting a coffee can" but where is this sound supposed to come from? at idle, i can hear this "pinging" sound coming out of the exhaust, but i really notice nothing at high rpm. is this "pinging" detonation? i hear nothing coming from the engine bay, its just the exhaust with the slight ping to it. anyone know?

ahhh, cmon you guys...see, the reason idk what this is, is that its happening at idle. i am not boosting, yet, but i want to make sure my motor aint gonna blow up once i add my turbo. its a real slight noise coming out of my exhaust. i can only hear it, if i walk around to the back of my car. i checked my plugs and they had nothing on them, so is this just a normal sound?

 

if you can hear something that sounds weird and your motor is boosted and in one piece, still; it is not detonation! If you can hear it over your exhaust and intake, you're motor is detonating to an insane degree.

If that soud is just at idle, it's just a fueling problem, but isn't going to blow your motor.

 

thank you very much sir...that is all i needed to know...oh, new question, by the symptoms, do you think my car is running rich or lean? it smells a little rich, but the symptoms seem to point towards running lean...any insight?

 

As you're moving, if the car suddenly gets a significant loss of power, usually stops going, and makes a REALLY fast rev limit/popping sound, that's detonation. You'd notice it.
