Damage to my new GT30R turbo? Is it still ok? Can it be fixed?
Heres my situation:
I bought a brand new Garett GT30R ball bearing turbo and i took off the compressor housing and the exhaust housing and i sent it out to HPC coatings to get them high temp coated.
I got a phone call this morning from the guy there and he told me there was damage to the compressor housing and that he wanted to show me the damage and ask me what to do. So i just got the pics now and this is what i see:
Now when i sent them there they were bubbled wrapped individually and packed with paper and cardboard. So im thinking that they damaged it.
Anybody know if this housing is still usable? <---- THis is my main question

might be able to clean it up on a lathe, but it depends on how deep the scarring is.
pm me with any questions

as long as the metal doesn't protrude into the blades of the compressor you're fine.
THere may be a .000000000000000000000001% decrease in flow due to turbulence but it probably won't be anything to worry about.

Re: (onemanlan)
It doesn't look that bad.
I would just smooth it out a bit with a dremel tool and lightly sand it until it's flush. Then put the housing back on and see if the wheels spin freely.
It looks like a pebble got sucked in or something. How's the compressor wheel look?

dam...its definently not fun when you spend this kind of money to have something like that happen...but i wouldnt jump to blame HPC yet...they are a reputable company..
i work for ups. ive seen packages get torn to all hell...when a customer comes into my store and says "i packed this myself, i want to insure it for $1,000" the conversation turns and we end up professionally packing it for them. it sounds corny and all..but everyone i work with including myself had to go to ups packing school...just to learn what needs to be done packing wise to prevent damage to an item...im hoping you insured it atleast...
good luck

Is this school on how to **** up packages royally?
Anything I send through UPS is all fucked once it gets somewhere ALWAYS.
You'd swear they do it on purpose.

They do...
My brother used to work for UPS packing trucks. They would kick boxes, throw them around, all kinds of ****.
Needless to say, I never use UPS, they are over priced, SLOW as hell, and damage your stuff.

Re: (mildly.interesting)
Did they already coat it? Or did they just open it and found out the damage? Someone's gotta explain what happened here, UPS or HPC. You didn't send it out like this, did you?

lol, I used to work for fedex and once in awhile, we'd do the same thing. I know I've always tried to take care of packages but sometimes you get bored and lazy...

you all can honestly say if all you saw all day was brown boxes you would pick each and every one up with the utmost care and gently place it wherever it needed to go? the company wouldnt function. i had DHL leave a $800 insured item in my apartment complex...even though i paid for an adult signature...they left it. fed ex...lost three of my packages. personally, i havent had one problems with UPS. i have seen them though.....and its not the shipping carrier who damages items...its the lack of packing that does. my store shipped out a $8,000 15th century statue...and it got to great britain in perfect shape...
dont hate on the brown

UPS did the same thing to me though; they left my $2,000 volk rims on my driveway when they were supposed to get a signature. The boxes were stacked on top of each other and were 5 feet tall with rays wheels written in big blue letters on each box. You could see the package from like two blocks away.

no they didnt coat it yet, when i sent it out it was brand new and bubbled wrapped and now the guy at HPC sends me these pics and says that the housing is damaged.... they say that the compressor housing and the exhaust housing were banging together in the box.. but that is bullshit bc the 2 housings were individually bubbled wrapped.

Re: (xtremeness101)
That definitely didn't happen in shipment if both halves were wrapped. HPC is jerking you around.
But it doesn't seem like a big deal. Just give the damaged area a once over with some 1500 or 2000 grit sandpaper.
