eventhough you said you don't think you have bad rings because it's not smoking my money is still on shot rings in this case.

semi-good is not OK.

well your compression test says 1 cylinder is getting only 80 VS the 150 the other 3 are getting. that leads me to think.
1. your piston/rings is fukt in someway (the 80 Cylinder)
2. you adjusted the valves wrong only for that same cylinder.
3.the tapping could possibly be a chunk of something broken off inside ( i really doubt it tho)

Valve adjustment needed? You did a compression test, now do a leakdown.
Im sure your getting atleast 40% leakage because your ringlands are cracked.

this was me 2 years ago

If you want to see if your rings are 'fukt' smell your oil to see if youre getting blowby. If it smells like gas and hydrocarbons then you have 'fukt' rings. Easiest way to find out is just to tear down the block. I mean since you already took off the head once, might as well do it again and tear down the block.

If your valve clearances are not enough (to tight) it will tap louder than if they were loose (have to be pretty tight) and that would explain the compression.

ok i still have the head off, I was getting oil out of my valve cover vent like it blew all over the IM. i didnt smell like gas though. is there a way to tell if you have your head off, if your rings are bad besides pulling the pistons. i never changes rings before and im not looking forward to doing, but i guess you have to start sometimes. Ok so if do have to do a ring job, i can just pop in new rings right, and just resurface the cylender walls and get new rod bearings. i really dont want to do this, sux. also about the valve clearances, i never touched anything internal on this engine prior to tonight. so your saying maybe the valves could have worked their way out of adjustment?

Valve clearances would not effect compression what so ever. Unless you had a bent valve that wasnt seating properly. Your valve lift just wouldnt be as much... thats all.

Ooops.. I read the reply wrong. He wouldve bent some valves if the valve clearances werent enough. These are interference motors so everything is pretty tight in there. Please explain how it would tap LOUDER if the valves were adjusted too tight. That doesnt make sense.

im thinkin head gasket for loss of compression
still doesnt explain the tap though.
im going to pull that one piston to double check tomarrow....if its good ill just put it back in.
does anyone know tourqu spec on the rods and the right piston rings on d15b is it the same as thed15b7 bottom end or what ? i did get blow by outa the valve cover. but it wasnt all the time which made me think it wasnt rings. you can get blow by from head gaskets like that too ...... since it was probably a smaller hole it didnt do it tall the time

what do you guys think about all this ????

someone already said it, but i'll reiterrate,
get a leakdown test done!

Aside from maybe bearing/rod damage, I don't know if there is much that can escape a leakdown test.

i didn't think that you could do a leakdown test with the head off ???
if there is a way that would be the shizzy!

If you got excessive oil coming out of your valvecover breather then there is a good chance your piston ring or ringland are screwed up in that one cylinder.

Loud tap, when at WOT, not at idle. Never burned any oil, thats one more reason id like to think it wasnt a ring btw i think the cause of the problem was a miss shift. oil didn't come out of the breather ALL the time just once when i noticed the problem. i cleaned up the oil mess and drove it 20 miles to the garage, and no more oil came out. if this head had lifters i would say it was a collapsed lifter, but im really unsure this time.

I put money it is a cracked ringland, or broken. Your probably going to have to invest in some new pistons.

why do you say its the ringlands not the rings ? i put the head back on and yea you guys were right, nothing to do with the head or head gasket. i put a stehiscope things upto the oil pan and i hear a tapping niose, maybe its a loose wrist pin ????
