Is this crank fixable? +more bearing questions..
i bought a civic from a guy who had been driving on it forever with a spun bearing, i drove it home and it locked up. basically im using this spare engine to do a build up until my other one blows. there was basically nothing left of the rod bearing, it was in pieces and very thin. so i was wondering if this crank was still good and could be fixed? i could use the crank that is in my running boosted z6, but by the time i get this built and decide to put in, it might not be any good no more.
you can feel some indentions on the journal. the rest of the journals measure 1.779" and this messed up one measures 1.768"-1.770" in some spots.

questions:
1) is this crank fixable or scrap metal?
2) ive seen alot of d series suffer from spun rod bearings, alot of them completely stock. what causes it since it happens all the time? and why does it always happen on the #1 cylinder?
3) i thought honda used colors to measure rod bearings? but on majestic it goes by A,B,C,D,E,F,G?? but at my local honda dealership, they use colors. but i hate them and get all my parts from majestic..

I am thinking one might be able to weld back on the steel that's missing from it, or grind all the journals down and run rods with smaller diameter BE bores.

Holy hell, it's a z6 crank? You can buy a virgin one for $50. Definitely, definitely throw away the spun crank.
There's a reason that many tuners (such as Jeff Evans) refuse to mess with cars that have previously spun bearings. It's just too risky.
I mean, heck, if it's a d-series, there should be no hesitation at all - get a new crank.

toss it, actually, take it to a scrap metal place and get a few bucks for it considering the price on steel, etc right now due to china
it "could" be undercut but I wouldnt mess with it due to what it is. cheap as hell to find a good replacement

i had mine fixed...granted it only had a few small scores from a previous owners spun bearing...it cost me 180 bucks for all the machine work and all new main and rod bearings...not to bad if you ask me
and yes d's are prone to spun bearings...the only thing me and my dad can think of (gold level honda certified mechanic of 28 years) is the oiling system is insufficient on a d...we did the oil pump mods on endyns site...we also cut 2 1 inch holes in the back side of the baffle where the oil pickup is...our thinking is that under load there just isnt enough oil in the shallow area for the pickup....wich leads to cavitation of the pump.
if you ever have the oil pan off your car fill up the pan with just under 4 quarts of water and youll see what im talking about....on my full build i did lots of small mods in order to get the max flow and pressure because spun bearings is the number one killer of d-series (especially y8's for some reason) haha we have 3 motors at the shop right now that suffer from bad bearings....

Definitely cheaper to replace than to fix. You cannot run it as is or bearing will spin again.

ok so its just a matter of finding a good one then, because honda wants $750 for a crank rofl.. i know itd be easier to replace but z6's are becoming rare these days.

match the numbers from whatever new crank you get to the letters on the block and you will have the codes you need to get the colors. ...That is the only "Honda" way to do it correct. going with any aftermarket bearing is a chance of clearances being off. if you want the truth and don't know how to measure clearances, use Honda bearings by the colors.

i know how to check bearing clearances and i know howto size them and i know honda goes by colors but majestic honda goes by letters.. thats where im confused because thats where im going to be ordering the bearings.

well that will definetly help in the search of another one, unless i use the one in my currently running engine which i doubt.
still cant figure out why majestic goes by letters for their bearings. i REFUSE to goto my local honda dealer because they are dumb ********.
