Default Crank damage

If a crank is damaged can it be welded? One of the surfaces has been worn out by what looks like oil starvasion to about .5mm or so, I have a local company that does great work on cranks, that can weld it up and grind it down to oe specs again, what I would like to know is if anyone has tried it, and also if it will weaken the crank?

Thanks.

To fix it properly with welding grinding and heat treating, it will cost more than buying a used one.
